“Joe Alt (@NDFootball) reached a speed of 14.14 mph within the first five yards of his 40-yard dash, the fastest by any offensive linemen over the last two years.“
We all thought he was enormous - until his dad visited, and was even bigger.
I just looked up his dad and found this:
"Bill attended Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri. He was member of the football team that had a 41 game winning streak and has been inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a four-year starter on Missouri Valley's basketball team, winning All-Conference Honors for three years. He was listed in Ripley's "Believe It or Not" for playing a basketball game in one state for Missouri Valley in the afternoon and playing a football game for Missouri Valley in another state that night. Bill graduated in 1949 with a degree in Business Administration, graduating cum laude. After graduating from college Bill joined Phillips Petroleum Company (now Conoco Phillips). While he had a job with Phillips, his primary reason for joining them was to play basketball with their famous Phillips "66ers". While doing this he turned down offers from several professional basketball teams including the New York Knicks. After playing four years with the Phillips 66ers, he played one year with the Ada Oilers in Houston, Texas. After his basketball days were over, he settled in Midland..."
heard a few coaches now say very, very little of it matters. The underwear Olympics are just that, a show for the fans. They tell them to have fun and don't hurt themselves. They watch the tape of what actually happened when they play football. Of course, there can be a tie breaker on a couple of guys that are similar, this guy was just stronger and faster type of deal.
Analytic guys have examined what traits of offensive lineman have proved to be the best predictors of future success in the NFL and he said the 2 components that stood out were length and the 40 yard dash. He admitted he couldn’t explain why the 40 was a good predictor but it’s something that the analytic guys view as pretty important.
He also raved about Alt’s athletic ability and said in a different draft he probably would be a top 3 pick.
If you're an offensive tackle with a huge gut, you're not running a Joe Alt 40. Alt is pretty lean and muscular. That's what you want.
yes, I'm joking
which is actually the basis of why they originally started testing 40 times.
The theory was that for marginal players, 40 times would be the deciding point on making the team, if the player could contribute on special teams.
It's evolved into the beat-all end-all of who to draft, but was never intended to be so.
The perennially good teams draft mainly on college film. Alt has a ton of great film.
They don't have any other Alt-ternative.
I kid, Audric, don’t kill me
The guy is just a freak. He looks like an absolute giant in this pic.
Why an OT's 40 time is important is beyond me...how many times in his 14 year career will he run 40 yards in a game?
His tape is quite good and hope he goes top 5-10. His dad was an awesome Chief for a long time
to run 40 yards is probably ill-conceived.”
OK, not exactly 40 yards but you get the point.
was on that O-Line. He went on to be Lou's weight coach his first couple years at ND.
as I recall. Maybe when grandfather Raridon came to Notre Dame, he brought his corn pipeline with him. Build strong bones, muscles, and teeth.
Though still not extremely important, good measure of short distance explosion. Heck, I would argue that for a skill guy, 10 yard fly time is more important than the 40, because it's showing the top acceleration speed.
against elite DEs in big games.
underwear olympics have no bearing on nfl success
with respect to OLs.
16 hours over a glorious early spring weekend makes me awesome. And then I fret about and tweak my mocks.
Which betting website are you using during the day-games?
well, that's not completely true--someone forwarded me the cut up version of Luke McCaffery running the 40 superimposed with his brother running the 40 back in 2017, so I did see that.
but I do love the NFL draft. I understand the people who make fun of me for it...but I do love the draft.
KC held it last year and I hope we get it again (but doubt it). And no, I didn't go down with a Chiefs construction hard hat, Kelce jersey, and face painted red/white.
in high school, of course, we ran a 40 yard dash. But someone measured it out and thinks it might have been a 38 or 39 yard dash. Think about it, a coach comes in and measures high schooler times for RB's and a kid runs a 4.75 or something...you can't give that score to a recruiter. Not that recruiters cared...our FB was 6'0 and 235lbs who was fast and powerful (see my profile) and every college wanted him. He probably ran faster than 4.75, but who knows.
So we'd have some guys run in the low 4.33 range (back in mid 80's)...guys were fast, for sure, four of our guys won the 4x400 state champ in big class, but did not run under 4.4.
