The classic SEC/SMU/UM model for illegally paying players was reliance on a rich booster who made it their hobby. They derived some sort of personal value out of it (through access to players, coaches, etc.), but never had a monetary ROI.

Now can't they just do the same thing, but without being secretive about it (and getting a tax deduction)? I'll grant that pure corporate sponsorships will find an equilibrium based on economics, but the booster game is now completely legitimate. That's what gives this the potential to be extremely dirty, in my opinion.
