Orange Crusher

posted by John Vannie
Syracuse scored on an 11-yard pass from Cameron Dantley to Donte Davis with 42 seconds remaining to stun Notre Dame by 24-23. The touchdown capped an improbable comeback from a 23-10 fourth quarter deficit for the underdog Orange, who survived a last ditch 52-yard field goal attempt by Brandon Walker as time ran out. As the ball fell to the earth just short of the cross bar, the stadium crowd sank into an eerie silence before the Syracuse sideline exploded with joy.

The loss dropped Notre Dame to 6-5 with almost certain defeat waiting in Los Angeles next weekend. Representatives from the Cotton, Gator and Sun Bowls were in attendance and its fair to assume that the uninspired Irish are no longer in their plans.

The Orange won for only the third time this season, and their 60 minute effort was a career highlight for outgoing coach Greg Robinson. Syracuse won despite playing some of the most inept football at Notre Dame stadium since, well, 2007. Unfortunately for the Irish, they helped set the game of football back a half century with their display of offensive incompetence. They also lost the fourth quarter by 14-0 to a team that had been outscored 94-20 in this period coming into the game.

The teams exchanged first quarter field goals before the Orange put together an 81-yard scoring drive midway through the second period. Notre Dame responded with a field goal to cut the Syracuse lead to 10-6, but did not see the ball again until only 40 seconds remained in the half.

That was enough time for Jimmy Clausen to hit three quick passes for 37 yards before launching a 35-yard touchdown strike to Golden Tate for a 13-10 lead just two seconds before halftime. Boos turned into cheers for the Irish as the teams retreated into the locker room.

The third quarter turned into a bizarre exchange of gaffes that would make any football purist consider seppuku. The Orange took the ball and committed two penalties and threw three incomplete passes before attempting to punt. Mike Anello burst through and got a piece of the ball for Notre Dame, who took over at the Syracuse 23.

A ten yard burst by Armando Allen was negated by a holding penalty, and Arthur Jones sacked Clausen on the next play. After yet another holding call, the embarrassed Irish faced a fourth down and 40 yards. The Orange fared no better on their next series. A near interception by David Bruton was followed by another incompletion, a sack and a second consecutive blocked punt. Sergio Brown did the honors for Notre Dame.

Starting from the Syracuse 21, the Irish managed a first down before the drive stalled and Brandon Walker was called upon for a short field goal attempt. A muff by holder Eric Maust resulted in a missed kick and Notre Dame had squandered two gift-wrapped scoring chances.

The Orange failed to seize the momentum, however, and the Irish put together a solid drive later in the period to extend their lead. Clausen found Tate again down the left sideline for 36 yards and a 20-10 advantage. When Syracuse fumbled on its next offensive play, it looked as though Notre Dame would turn the game into a laugher. Toryan Smith and Gary Gray combined to return the loose ball back the the Orange five yard line, but the Irish failed to move the ball an inch in three plays.

Walker's subsequent three pointer could only move the needle to 23-10, and the Orange knew they were still in it despite a horrible 15 minutes of football. The running game started to find cracks in Notre Dame's defense on the next series. Antwon Bailey shocked the Irish with a 26 yard burst to narrow the margin to 23-17.

As the clock began to wind down, Notre Dame failed to secure the outcome once again despite a 30 yard pass to David Grimes that moved the ball into Syracuse territory. Walker came up just short on a 49-yard attempt with five minutes left, and the Orange were bailed out on the ensuing offensive series when the Irish were called for pass interference on third down.

A holding penalty later in the drive did not deter Syracuse from its mission and the pass to Davis for the winning score almost seemed inevitable after Notre Dame had squandered so many opportunities. The crowd was logically disappointed and frustrated at this turn of events, but even the student section piled on by tossing snowballs as the team and coaching staff trudged off the field.

It was an embarrassing episode in a season that has rapidly deteriorated since the North Carolina game. A probable humiliation against USC may be the tipping point for the Weis experiment at Notre Dame, as it was for his predecessor.

Getting back to Syracuse for a moment, let's take a look at the answers to the questions that helped determine the outcome.

Will the Irish be able to shut down Brinkley and force the Orange to throw the ball?
No. Brinkley and Bailey combined for 170 yards and the Oroange were able to stick with the run even when down by 13.

Can the interior of the Irish offensive line keep Jones and Santiago in check?
No. The pair overpowered Notre Dame inside like men among boys.

Will Notre Dame’s rushers reach the Syracuse average surrender point of 200 yards on the ground?
Syracuse frequently loaded the box and dared Clausen to throw, but the paltry total of 41 rushing yards by the Irish was inexcusable.

Can Jimmy Clausen reestablish a downfield passing threat without Floyd?
Tate and Grimes had productive days statistically, but Robinson was able to find ways to bring pressure at critical times.

Will David Bruton record an interception in his final ND appearance?
Almost. Regrettably, Bruton's inability to stop Davis on the winning pass and his emotional reaction at the end of the game was a poignant scene that won't soon be forgotten.

Will the Irish finish the game properly once they take the lead?
I had a feeling it would come down to this. Maybe they should have worn the green jerseys after all.

As a fellow alumnus from the same era, it pains me to suggest that Weis should resign after this season. Unfortunately, this team has not responded to his leadership and their development as a cohesive team has stagnated despite isolated individual improvements. As painful as it is to make coaching changes, the University must act sooner rather than later to secure a proven coach no matter how challenging or expensive the task may be.

The administration has done nothing but exacerbate the decline of the program for 15 years, and it's beyond time that they are held accountable. Scores of alumni have been complicit by their silence, but this malfeasance cannot be allowed to stand by any of us.

There is none with this team. you play 6 games a year at ND stadium. those players should be fired up. i knew from that exact moment this was a bad game. If weis cant get players fired up to play in ND stadium then get the hell out.

Sorry to see the Seniors lose this game as this was a gritty bunch. I do not believe that 6 and 6 deserves a bowl game and I would suggest a very robust off season conditioning program as they were worn down by the end of the game. The lack of strength and physical play seems to be a problem with both lines and this has been going on for a number of years.

if charlie has an ounce of integrity, he will resign as there is no question he is incompetent. he, himself, must know this by now. moreover, if our board of trustees has any integrity, they will remove themselves from the process of hiring our next coach and hite consultants to do the job. they could not have fucked up the last two efforts any worse. ty and charlie are such incompetents it is baffling to think that anyone with half a brain thought they were BOTH up to the task. pathetic. our highly recruited o-line does not fire off the ball. no one on the team plays to the whistle. we don't audible out of run plays when there is 9 in the box. gerry faust and bob davie both would have won one between bc, pitt, and cuse. is anyone else sick of being the laughing stock of the sports world? get that bastard out of here.

During the past week, many Charlie Weis supporters had unkind words for realists such as myself that called for his firing. You stooped to such levels such as saying we were not true fans and proceeded to say dumb things like Charlie could not be held accountable until his 8th recruiting class is 5th year seniors.

What do you have to say now about your man Charlie? Who are the "true fans" that want what is best for the team and school?

Everyone needs to STFU. We're a young team and don't know how to close an opponent out. Next year we will be in the running for a BCS bowl. All you flamers of Charlie just need to chill the hell out. He will turn this boat around. Just give the man time. We still have a shot of upsetting USC. Patience people, this is only year four. If you don't like the Irish, turn the TV off or find another team. I'm still behind my team 120%. Just wait to 2010, when Clausen is a senior and we're in the NC game, I don't want to see all you bandwagon fans back!

It was senior day that started and ended with about as much excitement and emotion as you'll find in any senior community in the country. If you as a player, cannot get amped up by playing at ND stadium, especially for the last game of the senior's career, then kindly attend a University/College where football is not a priority. Maybe you would have been better off at Iona College, who this week canned their football program.

Charlie Weis was preaching from the beginning of the week that Syracuse would come out fired up and could be a tough opponent because they had nothing to lose. Apparently the kids on that team were not listening. Unlike previous meltdowns, Charlie kept his first team in the game, as many of demanded after last week's close call, but not a kid on that field wearing a blue jersey (other than Mike Anello) played with any kind of heart. Watch the tape again and count how many times the cameras focused on Allen and Tate looking anything but focused and obviously going through the motions.

This team has no heart and I'm sick to my stomach. I don't even want to watch the blowout next week at the Coliseum.

It's amaizing that a group of highly intelligent people could horse up our coaching situation as badly as our board of trustees. I mean Charlie AND Ty?!?! As the b.o.t. is clearly not up to the task of selecting football head coaches, let's begin the process ourselves. I like Greg Schiano or Chris Petersen at Boise. Anyone? Anyone?

Obviously, we care about winning and losing, but get serious here folks. It's time for commitment and consistency. Let's not turn into a Mickey Mouse operation because the media which hates us, only turns you sheep against us. Notre Dame will return to glory, and I will gladly donate double the amount to cover for the incoherant, uninformative, media crazed, blockheaded, bandwagon fan you are. Unfortunately, the Irish proved they are heading in the wrong direction.

I hate the idea of a positive loss, but NC seemed like a positive loss. they blew a 2nd half lead but fought to the end and seemed like they wanted to win and expected to win.

Since then, they have blown a big lead to Pitt, didn't even bring the offense to BC, played piss-poor in teh first half against Navy and played with a lack of interest closing it out, and today speaks for itself. How do you blow so many opportunitiesprovided by special teams and defense.

However, I think they need to keep Weis for another recruiting cycle. I don't think there is much interest in the job and will be less after a "panic firing". With the experienced players he has, I would expect Weis to be able to o 9-3 or 8-4 at worse next year. If he doesn't, I expect that he will resign.

Anyone that defends Charlie at this point has no credibility and should think of psatimes other than watching football. This is the worst executing team I have ever seen beyond the peewee level. That is a coaching issue. Play calling is a coaching issue. Demanding that your players fire off the ball is a coaching issue. Demanding that your players play until the whistle blows is a coaching issue. How can anyone look at what other teams do with so much less talent and think that Charlie is performing. And for those that think Charlie is learning on the job, I am quite sure we were not looking for a coach that would start out shitty but get better. We were looking for a good coach. Charlie so obviously is not a good coach, I am flabergasted that anyone can defend him. On what grounds. And for the guy that says that people who aren't fans of CW aren't fans of ND, check yourself. Whe the fuck do you think you are. You obviously have no brain, or maybe a parent who is involved in the hiring process. Either way, go f%ck yourself.

Also, I was not at the game, but if the articles are accurate, it is disgraceful that the students were throwing snowballs at the team; especially the defense in a huddle. The articles say Pat Kuntz was fired up and yelling at the crowd which doesn't surprise me. He has been one of few Irish players showing the heart to call himself the Fighting Irish. Are rare 2-star player that has played up rather than 4-star player playing down.

I am Charlie's last supporter, and I just saw the light. He's got to go.

My attitude going into this game was, "Charlie, as one Domer to another, you screwed it up, you've got to fix it." Now, I am convinced that he simply can't.

The only good thing Charlie has done for Notre Dame is recruit his a** off. My first thought is I wouldn't want any of the real, tangible talent (whether they perform or not) he has brought to ND to leave at Weis's ouster. However, I think almost all of the current players and the lion's share of the recruits came to Notre Dame and will stay here because of Notre Dame, not Charlie. Notre Dame and Notre Dame football is bigger than Charlie Weis.

They had a paltry 50 yards rushing today against a syracuse team. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! They probably won't get the ball past the 50 yard line next week. I live in SoCal and I just got tickets to the game. I am tempted to give them up b/c I dont want to witness the blowout. This is unacceptable. Where is our bar set? Are we ok w/ .500 teams. "It's only year 4?" LOL

Does it get better in year 5, or 8, or 10? This team has shown ZERO improvement from last year. The only reason we went from 3 wins to 6 is our joke of a schedule in '08.

Our O-line still can't run block and we don't have a RB who can gain yards consistently between the tackles. I got chastized when I called the comparison of Clausen to Quinn foolish, but without Floyd today, Clausen was below average at best. Every pass attempt greater than 5 yards is either a fade or a fly pattern...which inevitably translates into jump balls. Without Tate playing today, Clausen averages 5 yards per attempt for the game.

How can you have a 2-year starter telegraph EVERY throw? How do you have a defense that gets ZERO pressure on the QB? How do you get out-coached every 2nd half and make NO adjustments?

COLLAPSES AGAINST THE 'STACHE, DAVE WANNSTEDT, A LAME-DUCK 2-WIN CUSE COACH, AND A UNC TEAM THAT LOST BY 31 AT HOME TODAY?

Yes, I'm yelling...and off to grab a beer.

Pull the plug of Charlie.

talent is there. Emotion, desire, get it done not matter what attitude is not. O line coach MUST BE FIRED. weis didnt forget how to call play or run an offense, but with out the line he can do nothing. If the o line coach is not fired this off season then next year will be similar to this. and that is not acceptable

There's faith and there's stupidity. I hope whoever wrote that is a BC or USC fan because if I'm them, I hope Weis stays for the entirety of his contract. No Irish fan in their right mind would blindly support a man who repeatedly makes the same mistakes and puts his team in a position to lose.

Those who accept losing are losers.

I definatly think Weis has his problems but can you really blame the coaches for the lack of execution by the players? Holding is something I am pretty sure they do not practice. Dropping passes, missing tackles are also some things they do not work on. Until the players decide to do the things that they have been taught to do since pop warner this team has no chance. I am not a big Weis fan but this is not the first groupe of players who have come through the Golden Dome and not lived up to the hype. The team is young and I say give him one more year. If they decide to play and win close games, minus the penalties than we should see more improvment next year. If not then I say we look for another coach but remember the grass is not always greener on the other side.

I've been an ND fan since I was in Kindergarten in South Bend in 1963...That's 45 years for you folks scoring at home.
I graduated from ND in 1981. The worst year I ever had to witness during that 27 year period was something like 7-4. And we thought that was HORRIBLE and an ABOMINATION....
Unfortunately Charlie is the worst coach we've ever had...by far. I wish he'd been successful but he hasn't. He has been simply TERRIBLE. The play calling has been poor but the offensive line has been EVEN WORSE. How can these young men look at themselves in the mirror after a game? They have disgraced themselves and shown no heart, no character and no pride in their school's (fast fading) tradition of excellence on the gridiron.
Fire Charlie now. Period.

Sorry bubbachewie, but coaching is all about execution. Well-coached teams don't repeat the same mistakes, play out of position, and get flagged for dumb penalties on a consistent basis. The great coaches at any level - Bill Parcells, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Lou Holtz, etc. - demand excellence or you don't play. At ND under Holtz, if you put the ball on the ground, you didn't play. He'd yank you right off the field. Players should cherish the opportunity to play at ND...or any division I school for that matter.

If you don't have heart as a coach or player and can't win as a 20-point favorite, please transfer or give your scholarship to someone who cares about tradition.

Bubbachewie-

Yes I hold the Coach accountable for a lack of execution and penalties. That is what a coach is supposed to do. You teach and motivate during practice. If kids make mistakes or committ penalties during practice, you punish them (ie. make them run or other sort of conditioning). It is called negative reinforcement. All coaches use it regardless of the sport. You perform in games how you practice, and it is obvious Weis is not getting it done there. Another note, you never see well coached teams committ penalties in crucial game situations. Penalties are a big reflection of the coach...

"This is the worst executing team I have ever seen beyond the peewee level. That is a coaching issue. Play calling is a coaching issue. Demanding that your players fire off the ball is a coaching issue. Demanding that your players play until the whistle blows is a coaching issue."

Again, another anonymous poster made the above comment. If you have made it far enough in your football career to play for Notre Dame the coaching staff should not have to remind you that your job is to execute on every play, to fire off the ball on every snap, or to play until the whistle blows for a full 60 minutes. These are some of the most intelligent kids playing college football and the expectations for Notre Dame football players should not be a news flash. If the players on this team, particularly the captains and the seniors, do not take it upon themselves to challenge USC next week it will be an ugly contest.

I actually felt for Brandon Walker today. I was waiting for someone to comment on his game and sure enough, there it was.

Walker was HORRIBLE to start the year, but unlike the rest of the team he actually IMPROVED over the course of the year. 4 out of 5 kicks, including a 48 yarder to keep us in the game against PITT? Today, just feet from giving us the victory on a 53 yarder? Relying on your kicker to make a 50-yard kick in 20 degree weather isn't exactly the recipe for success LOL. Regarding the 20-yard kick, I guess you could blame him if he snapped, held, AND kicked on that play, but not so much...

Bottom line, this game should've been wrapped up by halftime. I can't believe Sharpley never got a shot with the number of picks Clausen threw this year.

This loss was worse than losing to Navy last year. It was horrible. Notre Dame bungled their way to only a 23-10 lead in the 4th quarter, but then managed to let a terrible Syracuse team score two touchdowns in their last two possessions to lose the game - on Senior Day at home no less. I was just fuming watching the last quarter. It was just plain pitiful football. I’ve been a defender of Charlie Weis and love Notre Dame, but I can’t take this any more. They will likely lose by 40 points next week at Southern Cal. I do not plan to watch it. In fact, I’m giving up on following this football team until something major happens to convince me to come back. I just can’t take this emotionally any longer! Syracuse! Charlie Weis is a very likeable and talented football wizard. He's kind and thoughtful of his players when they lose and when they are down;which is far too often.
He is about as emotional as a tuna fish sandwich and football teams run on emotion; they run on pride and desire. A coach must inspire, so a coach must be electric and dynamic. Neither of these qualities are in Charlie. He would be a great, great offensive coordinator, but he has no charisma with that team.
Holtz, on the other hand, was a skinny little guy with a lisp who was a third string player. Yet, he had, and has, the charisma of Howard Hill in The Music Man. Find us a medicine man and give the offense to Charlie.

Given the amount of money tied up in Weis' contract, I feel pretty confident that he'll be back for another season next year. But supposing the Administration feelings that 25 million reasons are not enough to keep him around, who replaces Weis?

Brian Kelly has won at the FBS level and succeeded with Big East teams in the FCS. Given ND's soft schedule over the next couple of years he might be able to succeed in South Bend at least initially. However, I'm not convinced he's the best fit.

If Petersen of Boise State gets another BCS bowl bid and subsequent win he probably makes the short list but would he be willing to leave a successful program and likely a dynasty in the WAC for the scrutiny of ND?

Someone suggested Pat Hill from Fresno State but he has had back to back underachieving seasons as well and in one of the smaller conferences.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be than many options for a replacement at this point. I am still behind CW for the moment but a blowout loss to SC might put another CW supporter over the edge.

This game was shameful on many levels, but one stat really stands out. Syracuse ranked 104 in total def and 107 against the run entering this game. They had given up an average of 209 yds per contest. We managed just over 60 today at home on senior day against that front. Anyone who is knowledgeable about the fundamentals of winning football understands you build from the ball out. The line is your foundation and ours has been about as porous as a sponge the last two years. Yes, Charlie is a great recruiter. He is a better coach than Willingham or Davie. But the fact is we got pushed around today in a defining game and there is no excuse for that type of play. Someone needs to be held accountable and that person is the head coach. GO IRISH

How is it that everyone holds on to the premise that ND has this great well of talent? Michael Floyd and Golden Tate have talent. A defense that lets a 2-8 team ram it down their throat twice in the fourth quarter is not that talented. We have no one that was remotely close to the Syracuse d-line in terms of talent. Despite all of our blitzing and junk defenses we never get to the qb and runners always have their best days against us. All these 5 star recruits - give me a break. also, this was the first time the Irish ever lost to an 8-loss team.

O-line has been coached terribly since Joe Moore was railroaded by Davie. Latina needs to go. There were several plays today where the O-line (specifically the center) touched no one. On several of them, the defender came directly in on Clausen or a back.

Can we can NBC as well. The coverage and commentary are awful. This may help the coffers, but it has to hurt football; especially with ESPN/ABC in direct competition.

Best thing that could have happened. We needed to lose to SU just to show us how much we really suck. Beating SU by 2 to go to 7-4 would give us a misleading sense of success. After all, winning by 2 vs an 8-2 team who just fired their coach should not be considered a win. Especially after escaping a near loss to Navy the week before. Speaking of coaches, here's a Zen conundrum for you: if you lose to a coach that just got fired, should you keep your job?

Its all been said up above. I, like the others, love Notre Dame; do not have the talent to have played and am therefore in awe of those who do and have played for Our Lady. I feel for the players because CW fails them. Young college players are there to be TAUGHT how to play and succeed so they can have a chance to play professionally. CW fails them in that department. The game performances are all the evidence needed. I do support Notre Dame and the players always. But its not just the losses by CW teams, I can handle those, but its the type of losses, ones to inferior opponents on multiple occassions. I think what scares most of the people who commented above is that the general air surrounding CW and his teams is that they are getting worse as time passes. With the talent on this team losses like this year's --and the absence of a signature win over a quality opponent signaling progress and some hope of respectability-- it can only be CW's failure. I hope he and Notre Dame football part ways and all the young talented players, who have so much real potential to be truly great, stay and are eager to learn how to win from the next coach who mercifully will be there to help them soon.

p.s. --I am a true Notre Dame fan because I truly hope I am wrong about Charlie Weis; I hope I eat all my words above. I hope they destroy USC, run all over them and pass for 400 hundred yards, proving the best may be yet to come from Charlie and his teams. However, I have now seen enough to stop being a blind believer and hope for the players' sake that Charlie is let go. They deserve better.

JONES..JONES...JONES...
Can anyone provide an explanation why nobody blocked this guy?!?!??

Going for it on 4th down and failing.....AGAIN!!!

After last week's game, I was still undecided if CW should go. Now I can type with conviction that it's time to show him the door. What an awful way to see the team fold in the final home game of the season. I'm sorry for the seniors.

I'll watch the predicted lambasting of our boys by USC next week, but it'll call for additional beer to put out the fires!

After today's performance, I'm against the Irish accepting a bowl invitation, except that it'll give the underclassmen some additional practice and play time. Because the almighty dollar seems to be a huge influence on decisions these days, we can look forward to seeing yet another bowl loss and the subsequent ND-hating media coverage harping on another post-season loss.

Finally, I'm still troubled over the issue of replacing CW....who the bejeebers would want the job???

What about BC's Defensive Coordinator? He's certainly instilled heart and discipline in their supposedly under-talented troops.

We are in a bad bind after this disgraceful loss. There is a mating dance in recruiting a college football coach, at least a good one. It is an extended dance and we are late in the season. Our new AD is a fine guy but he is brand new to the AD business. Six weeeks ago he and the rest of us thought that it was set that Weis would get another year. After the collapse, it may be very difficult to get into the mating dance especially with an AD who has not had time to build up networks and connections. It is like getting a nice prom date on week before the dance.
Conversely, we are going to get absolutely killed next week and Weis will spend the next year twisting slowlly in the wind.
Our one selling point is that replacing a great recruiter who can't coach can be a very fruitful venture, e.g.
Tressel after Cooper
Meyer after Zook
even Coker ( a bad coach) after Davis. Regards,

It's time Weis either resigns or is fired. Today's loss is inexcusable regardless of what any pro-Weis fanatics think or say. This team has top 20 talent yet cannot beat any top 20 teams. The team has been in a state of confusion and disarray since second half of the Pitt game.

Any short list should include Kyle Whittingham of Utah. Utah has improved every year since 2005 so he's worth a look.

Weis is clearly incapable of making ND a perennial top 10 team. Note to Weis worshipping airheads: It won't happen next year or any year with Weis at the helm.

I see some USC fans have crashed the board. No doubt they'll destroy ND next week but I hope they face an SEC foe in a post season bowl so they can see what's it's like playing in a real conference. The Pac 10 is almost as laughable as the Big 10. Oregon State spanked USC but Penn State destroyed Oregon State 45-14. Do the math SC fans, it won't be pretty should you face the Florida Gators.

I am an alum of ND and am presently at Baylor. Folks, if Baylor went against ND now, the much more talented team would go down. That right, BAYLOR would take ND. Baylor's record is poor, but it lost to the best teams in the nation, all the while playing with pinache with an talented, very young quaterback. We got a new coach who has made a difference. Weis has not demonstrated the ability to translate talent into wins or even into spirited play. I believe it is time for a change. I value the quality of my Irish education in the classroom and would love to see all that money going to football reflected in quality performances on the field.

It's funny when some people write "their young" and the good old "wait till next year" post, here's a news flash they're all young since they're in college. This is just a poorly coached team, no excitement, no passion from the players, very tough to watch. I'll continue to watch the Irish, but they simply did not improve throughout the season and this was an easy schedule this year. To come out with only six wins is pathetic and hardly an improvement from last year. All I can say about next week is keep it respectable, 3 touchdowns or less.

It is hard to understand that this is the same guy who coached this team the first two years? The only successful play they have now is Clausen quickly throws the ball up in the year to a very covered Golden Tate and they hope he out jumps the defenders and makes the catch. Syracuse did every thing they could to try to hand ND the game and they could not take it. I know everyone is unhappy but remember - life is short and it is only a football game.

I contributed to the Sorin Society for YEARS. And I have given donations to ND, since I graduated.

Certainly, there are more important things than "football" in this crazy world that we live in today. However, football is our TRADITION at Notre Dame. Football MADE what Notre Dame is today. Football is what we love. Excellence in football is our legacy. Excellence in football represents Notre Dame Tradition. Our football program represents all that is GOOD about Notre Dame.

We have somehow gotten away from our TRADITION. Our fellow alum, Charlie Weis, does not have what it takes to get us back. Sorry, Charlie.

I am done with my contributions, until we get back to where we belong. 20 years is way too long.

I love Notre Dame. I love what our Football Program means to our University. Let's get back to where we belong. Whatever it takes. Whatever the cost.

Charlie trick plays work a lot in the college game and the end around does not count as a trick play. the offense is so predictable shotgun pass power i or single back run. We need an idenity a new one every week depending on the opponet is great in theory but you have to find something that works for you first. it does not matter what your scheme is if you cant execute get back to fundamental weis if you know what they are i am getting sick and tired of defending you

It is time to realize the immense issues and needs which must be addressed. The fact that the current team is somewhat unpredictable is somewhat common throughout the Middle West. It is disturbing that one of the best recruiting classes for a number of years and it is only now starting to realize some fruit.
Coach Weis has been exposed to and has dealt with a myriad of issues. The is no doubt that the most logical and appropriate course of action is to bring him back. Yet the assistants - particularly the offensive line coach and special teams coach need some realistic review.
It is difficult to watch what Coach Weis is doing to his offensive coordinator, a Domer with a great history. It is hopeful he will find a new home where he can be respected and appreciated for his work.
Thanks.

You are all right. For a team that was expected to only win 3 games this year we should fire the coach that has been building a fairly decent team. How many top ten recuiting classes has Weis brougt in since he has been at Notre Dame?
Let's throw that away and start over again. In an environment of needing instant gratification let's keep hiring and firing coaches until the fans and "alumni" are satisified.
Instead, let's look at the team and fix the holes or deficincies. Quaterback, marginal. Kicker, horrible. Do you think that by getting rid of Weis that we are going to be champions next year. I think not.

Did someone just say Jimmy is "marginal"? I agree he is not playing that well, but I think that has a lot to do with the coaching. Jimmy was the mostly highly touted HS recruit since John Freakin Elway. Don't tell me he has marginal talent. He is not being put in a situations to experience success, and Charlie is obviously failing in teaching the kid how to be an effective QB.

The game was very disheartening for ND fans and especially for the team. The score didn't really matter. The fact that an 8 loss team was even still in the game in the 4th quarter is what mattered. This is Charlie's 4th year with 3 top recruiting classes behind him. He has proven without a doubt that he is in over his head. There is no reason to waste another year. Angry eagle, I take no umbrage with most of your diatribe, belligerent as it may be. I even agree with many of your points, though I would probably phrase them differently. However, given that you seem a fairly well spoken and educated individual, why choose to undermine your mostly verifiable claims about Notre Dame football with an unnecessary and unjustified attack on the school as an academic institution? Your basis for claiming "the school sucks" is that many Notre Dame students are former high school athletes, as is probably the case at many other institutions, Boston College included, I would assume. I do not see how that argument holds water whatsoever. Notre Dame is a superb academic institution that provides amazing resources for research to faculty, graduate students, and, perhaps most notably, to its undergraduates. It sends scores of students on to law, medical, and graduate school every year. There is no legitimate basis for saying the school sucks. Every year millions upon millions of dollars are devoted to new research endeavors and enhanced research facilities on campus. If you want your opinion respected (or at least heard), I would stick to your guns (mocking the ineptitude of Notre Dame football) and leave out the baseless and asinine attacks on Notre Dame as an academic institution.

The whole snowball incident is uncalled for. No matter how disgusted or pissed you are, you don't do that. What message does that send about the student and "future leaders" coming out of Notre Dame? That gesture was class-less and if players transfer or we lose out recruits, I won't be surprised and I'll blame it on that incident a lot more than our performance this season. You just don't do that. As an alum, I'm ashamed that our student body did that. That comes off to me as a bunch of selfish, whiny brats. You go put on a football uniform and play a game. You'll be scared shitless the moment you set eyes on the opponent.

Back to the team, that was a lousy performance. No heart at all and the only person to blame is Weis. If you can't get your players motivated, then something is wrong. That New Jersey toughness doesn't work on everybody. It takes a little more at the college level to motivate a player than at the pro level. However, I personally would keep Weis for one more season. If it's not a national title or a major bowl win type season, then he needs to go. Or, if he refuses to replace some of his assistant coaches, especially Latina, then he needs to go. I'm still cheering on the Irish and I still respect those young men. No matter how bad it gets, you don't disrepect those guys like that. It's not them, it's the coaching and the direction that the admin is trying to take this school. If you want to be an Ivy League school that bad, then play Ivy League football or drop down to Division III. Don't try to be Harvard and USC at the same time.

Its plain and simple - we can all live with a team who plays their hearts out and loses. This team is young - very young but I worry about the heart - The team will reflect its leadership. Charlie reminds me of Bill Callahan - no enthusiasm all business - these are kids not business men. Charlie has recruited great talent - but preparing them to play is not happening. The increditable difference between this team and the young players at other institutions is preparation, motivation, and a game plan they can follow.Having said all this I feel for the athletes - I hope we don't lose recruits but if we don't start looking like a college team who wants to win we will lose more than good recruits. Charlie get it done or go.....

ND football is suffering a slow death. The program will continue to decline because it no longer appeals to the top recruits.

Why should a top recruit want to play in a miserable climate that shrouds itself in an ancient history of success ?

ND football has been a declining program for many years.

The players on this team and players that have given verbal commitments are undersized athletes that bought into the mystic spewed by recruiters.

Notre Dame football is on a respirator and the hope for a recovery doesn't exist.

I am a diehard ND football fan. My mother and father both went to Boston College. So i have to watch their games if i am around them. Jags can really coach, but they still suck their talent level is so far below ours it is not even funny. (guarantee they blow it next week always do). Haha and we were shut out by them.
Funny enough my dad over the past two years has reiterated time and again how much CW sucks. Today was the first time my bias was no longer able to hold onto the idea that Charlie is our guy. Its a said story at this point.

URBAN come save us.

You know what is bull s**t about this review system? Do you guys remember last week when Navy recovered the onside kick and then they threw the deep pass down to the 1 yard line. The receiver had half his foot in and half out yet they ruled it a TD, Im still trying to figure that one out. Today when it appeared Tate had most of his foot in on the play that Weis challenged it was ruled incomplete. I know that this isnt the play that lost us hte game, but The officiating has been inconsistent all season and I still dont see how the Navy player had half his foot in and half out and it was ruled a catch!

Angry Eagle always thought that Ivy League meant class, but you certainly disproved that with your insults and personal attacks.

I checked out your profile and was not surprised to see that your interests are "BC Basketball, BC Football, wife, kids (in that order)" Sports over family and you call me a loser.

History is history, and ND's has always been greater than BC's and BC has a long way to go before it is even close.

Don't go away angry, just go away.

Angry Eagle,

We ND folks are wallowing in our own misery here and clearly have enough of our own problems. But you hanging out on this site is the most pathetic thing I have ever seen.

You've said so many times you are an ivy leaguer I'm more convinced than ever that you are not. And if you are, what the hell does that have to do with anything? You sound like a typical sub 200pt SAT BC guy (or girl) with an ND chip on their shoulder the size of Boston.

Dude, we're pathetic enough in our therapy session for our beloved school and team. But at least we are MEMBERS of this therapy group. Go find a chat room for guys who live with their Mom and kick their dog.

Yes, I want to Charlie to go.

But if the stories about the student section throwing snowballs at the team are actually true, ND has reached a lower point than anything being done on the football field. That is truly pathetic and I hope it's not true. I'll be reading the Observer this week to see if that's what was really happening. Awful.

Hey Angry Eagle, you can cut the Dennis Miller routine already. You know a lot of big words. Congratulations. We get it.

Students weren't throwing snowballs at the players, or most of them weren't anyways. They were throwing them at the orange glove TV timeout man. Not that that's a whole lot better...
