Talent vs. Execution in Baltimore

posted by John Vannie
Notre Dame travels to Baltimore on Saturday to play the Naval Academy at M&T Bank Stadium. The Midshipmen broke a 43 game losing streak to the Irish last season in triple overtime, and hope to prey upon the recent offensive downturn by the struggling visitors. Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo has had two weeks to prepare for Notre Dame, but there is not much secret to the basic ingredients of his triple option offense.

The 6-3 Middies average 29 points and an enviable 300 yards on the ground per game. Three quarterbacks have combined for only 60 passing attempts this season, but 62% have been completed for an average of over 16 yards per catch. Niumatalolo protects his undersized defense by substituting freely throughout the game to keep players fresh. Navy has managed to compete against every opponent with the exception of Pittsburgh, who handled the option attack and ran roughshod over the Middies by 42-21.

Meanwhile, the Irish were stung by the Panthers two weeks ago in four overtime periods and were shut out in an uninspired performance at Boston College last Saturday. Pride alone should be sufficient motivation to get back on the winning track, but two consecutive losses to the Midshipmen would devastate the program. Once again, Notre Dame is unquestionably the more talented team, but victory is no longer certain in a season that has deteriorated from potential redemption to significant underachievement.

Still, the Irish have a golden opportunity to secure a winning season and a bowl bid with wins this week and next against beatable foes. There is no reason for this young team to pack it in since almost all of the starters return next year along with a number of talented backups. The onus will be on Coach Charlie Weis to regain control of his team and rejuvenate the offense. The vultures have begun to circle the Dome this week after a terrible performance in Boston, and Weis responded to the heat by taking back the play calling responsibilities from Offensive Coordinator Mike Haywood.

Notre Dame Offense vs. Navy Defense

The Irish must run the ball to win, even if Navy adds rover Jeff Deliz into the box with the rest of its 3-4 defense. Ball control and time of possession will be important as Navy can burn several minutes off the clock in long scoring drives. Notre Dame must return the favor instead of relying solely on its quick strike capability. Those opportunities may be available from time to time, but the Irish will not win with another anemic rushing performance.

Jimmy Clausen has been banged up and sick in the last two weeks, and his usual accuracy has suffered. Navy’s secondary should not provide a significant challenge for the likes of Michael Floyd and Golden Tate, but they will battle fiercely on every play. Rashawn King is the team’s best cover man, while fellow corner Ketric Buffin stands only 5’7”.

Linebackers Corey Johnson and Ross Pospisil are among the leading tacklers along with Deliz and free safety Wyatt Middleton. The front line is anchored by veteran nose tackle Nate Frazier, who is by far the largest Navy defender. Frazier caused problems for Notre Dame last season and will draw significant attention again this week.

Notre Dame is relatively healthy except for guard Chris Stewart. David Grimes should see more time this week after nursing back spasms for nearly a month. The Irish can take control of the game if they are able to execute in the running game and throw the ball in situations other than the dreaded 3rd and long.

Navy Offense vs Notre Dame Defense

The bye week will allow the Midshipmen to put in a few wrinkles for the visiting Irish, but Navy will focus primarily on execution of its base offense rather than trickery. Niumatalolo employs three quarterbacks, which is probably a good idea given the amount of hits each takes in the option offense. Starter Jarod Bryant takes most of the snaps and fellow senior and 2007 starter Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada will also play. Sophomore Ricky Dobbs is a bigger, stronger player that could see action.

Tailback Shun White is the main threat as the pitch man and is the team’s leading rusher with just under 100 yards per game. Fullback Eric Kettani runs the dive play extremely well and at 243 pounds is difficult to bring to the ground. Tyree Barnes is by far the main threat at wide receiver, and Notre Dame cannot afford to lose sight of him.

The offensive line is not large by current standards, but center Ricky Moore and left guard Anthony Gaskins are seniors who have the most size and experience. They open holes for the Kettani and allow Bryant to turn upfield quickly on the keeper.

It’s no secret that Notre Dame must do a better job on first down than last season, when it seemed the Middies were consistently gaining seven or eight yards per play. The Irish must come through with a few three and out stands, and will be in serious trouble if Navy can string together consecutive drives of 10-12 plays.

Special Teams

Senior kicker Matt Harmon is quite proficient in the field goal department with 14 successes in 16 attempts. The Navy return teams have not been overly productive but the coverage units have not allowed any significant yardage. The Irish return teams have blocked poorly this year and don’t figure to turn that around this weekend.

Blocked punts have suddenly become an issue for Notre Dame, and it will be interesting to see if there is improvement in the time it takes Eric Maust to get his kicks airborne. Place kicker Brandon Walker did not get an opportunity to attempt a field goal last week, but he is undoubtedly anxious to get going again since his last appearance occurred in the fateful fourth overtime against Pitt.

Summary

Navy has a real chance to win if it can execute well and enjoy a higher percentage of productive offensive possessions. The Irish may score easily at times but may also stop themselves with mental errors and sloppy play. If they do this often enough, they can lose this year as well. Ideally, Notre Dame will beat the Midshipmen at its own game, which is running the football. The Irish don’t necessarily have to outgain Navy on the ground, but there cannot be a huge disparity in rushing yards and time of possession.

Defensively, discipline and sure tackling are the key ingredients to control the option. Reverses and occasional play action passes must be covered, but simple tasks such as hitting the quarterback on every play, controlling the pitch man and clogging up the dive play will pay the largest dividends.

Here are a few questions that will help determine the outcome;

Who will win the battle of first down when Navy has the ball?
Will the Irish run the ball more than 50% of the time?
Can Clausen return to form after a poor showing against Boston College?
Which team will make more plays of 20+ yards?
Will the Irish size advantage turn into physical dominance?
Which defense will force turnovers?

Prediction

Notre Dame needs this game badly, but Weis will be challenged to transform his offense into a finely tuned machine after stumbling around in the dark last week. The game will be close and Navy will once again fight to the bitter end. The question is whether the Irish will blink in the face of another motivated foe or if their effort and execution will finally match their talent. There simply is no excuse for anything less, but Irish fans may be less than satisfied with the final margin.

A final score of 28-27 would be a loss in my book. I hate to think of what will be said if the Irish lose this game. I have to admit I have no confidence in this team at this point. They need to right this sinking ship vs. Navy. Let's see what heart this team has.

What a spoiled brat.

No wonder no coaches want the ND job with "fans" like this.

If the win by 40 but only have 5 yards rushing is that OK?

Please post every stat that will be acceptable to you.

Last week I was ashamed of the teams effort in Boston. This week I ashamed of "fans" like this.

Navy also lost to Duke (4-5 , 1-4 in ACC). This is a game Notre Dame should win every year. ND lineman are 50 lbs bigger and their running backs are as big as the Navy lineman. A total mismatch in every way except heart. ND was just plain bad last year and Navy's only win in 50+ years took overtime.
The fact that the ND fans HOPE to win this game speaks volumes. ND has a 2 million dollar national recruiting program, their own TV contract, a 4.5 million a year Head Coach, yada yada yada. There is a fly in the ointment somewhere. Maybe overpaying for a former NFL coordinator with no Head Coaching experience and a reputation supported by cheating was a bad decision.

You people are such babies! "I have no faith in this team." I would have loved to be in your living room during game time versus UM or UNC for that matter. ND has shown it is capable of doing great things...passing wise, however, the running game is not there. It's obvious we don't have the backs that can carry the load week in and week out. All we can hope for at this point is that we just get better the next three games, including against USC, and win a damn bowl game. I don't care which one, although I don believe it will be the Gator Bowl even if the Irish end up 7-5. I have to agree with being ashamed of our fanbase this year. Everyone had a boner when CW is bringing in this young talent, which by the way is evident. Rally around your team and coach and finish strong. Next year will be a new year and new team. You should know that.

If Florida was playing Navy this weekend their game plan would be...how are we going to score 50 points and not 100 so we don't embarass Navy. That describes the difference in ND and the big time D1 programs today.

This is insane. Navy should have lost to TEMPLE. Temple had Navy down by 20 in the fourth quarter and blew the Owls blew the game.

Notre Dame wraps this up by 1:00 and we can all go to the National Aquarium. ND 34, Mids 14.

That 28-27 gets us in a bowl game. If you don't like close games in November maybe you should take up knitting or bingo.

I keep hearing how Weis "pulled back the reins" on playcalling from Haywood, but at his press conference he said Haywood had to deal with a death in the family and they had decided this last Friday before BC. Who's right?

They seem totally disorganized again. we can Anal-ize the causes to death.

I have taken a good look and noticed something different about ND's O-line compared to others its something you should focus on too -you will be amazed if you notice it.

I have seen it on snaps and also false starts....compared to other tems ND's O-line rises off the snap in a crouched position feet moving back as opposed to pushing up and forward.

Wow...there's your answer to the running game! They have organized the line for total pass protection, no pulling, no crack back...crouched defensive back peddling - - what is that? I get it they need to protect the QB, but a running attack does that too!

Who devised that plan I do not know, the O-line is 5 feet in the back field 3 seconds after a snap -no wonder a 3 man rush at BC was a problem.

They will be 7 and 5 or 2 less losses and 2 more wins from last year - hardly a turn around let alone a marked improvement.

Until ND realizes their O-line needs to attach NOT back up - there will be no pounding the ball and without that they will be a one dimensional team, locked in mediocrity battling for survival against power houses such a SDSU.

What pisses me off about or offensive line situation is that all this "bulk" that they added has done nothing but give them heavy legs. Like that was the problem last year. The problem was that they had no clue who they were blocking on most plays, hence the breakdowns. Now they know the schemes, but have cement blocks for feet.

He better not give the offense back to Haywood either, and predictable play calling antics.

Anyone know when and where they are running?? I do.

Like I keep saying we need a new Offensive Line Coach! One that can get this huge line to its full potential. Also I still have yet to hear any names of coaches who would want to give up a smaller school to maybe last at ND for 4 years? Why give up a good program and job security when the fans after 1 or 2 games will want your head.

How much is Weis being paid per win? I think last year it was over $1M per win.... The guy isn't worth $10K. Meanwhile, students take out more debt...and don't give the bull that spending money on HC Weis brings in more revenues....he doesn't need that much.

Wow, what fan four years ago thought that would have ever been written about our Notre Dame team?

Has it really gotten this low? I love the academies and love the way they never let up. I wish our guys played like that. I wish our coach instilled that into our greater talented players.

Shame.

You sunny day fans are a joke. You loved CW after the first two years, then we have a bad season, which was predictably going to happen. Any true ND fan knew that last year was inevitable, and this year is acutally going the way most thought it would, maybe one more lose than I would have liked. This team came out of the blocks slow but built up speed quick. They have struggled a bit and have paid for that.

The Defense has been stellar this years and with almost all of the defense coming back next year with talented depth, I expect big thing next year and good thing the rest of this year.

The Offense has struggle the last two games, but has put up good numbers this year showing great promise. Guess what, all of these kids are coming back, most for the next two or three years.

Ultimately I personally believed we would sit at 8-4 or 7-5 and make a bowl game. I believe we will win our bowl game finally after 10 years and keep moving forward.

Trust me none of the two previous coaches could have turned things around or recruited the talent at ND now. Actually, for you fans that say ND recruits itself, take a look, we would not be where we are if ND recruited itself. We need a coach like CW to show the energy and stop making the excuses of Davies and Willingham. Our talent base would be further ahead if ND recruited itself.

So stop your whinning, support your team and coach, and see there is a bright future at ND. Or just go support SC and Florida while they're winning, but don't come back to ND like your a huge fan when we start competing for the National Title again. Believe me we will be.

One more thing I forgot in my last post for you dooms day fans that thought our last two bowl games were a joke. Yeah, ND did lose by double digit margins but were in both those games for the most part. In the Fiesta Bowl against OSU we are a bad fumble call turned over away from stiking to win that game. In the Sugar bowl it didn't truly get away until the end but we battled. So please stop your whinning or get away from ND cause we don't need your type of support. Some of you posting blogs I don't even think are ND fans, but people just trying to keep a negative vibe in the ND Nation.

I agree with whoever posted the comment about if Florida or USC played Navy the question wouldn't be whether we would win, but how we could keep the score around 50, Notre Dame needs this sort of attitude the other big-time programs have, it hasn't been there since Holtz left. We need to step on Navy's face with a hobnailed boot for 60 minutes Saturday, and I hope we win by 40!

Vince did you even watch these games? We were not even competitive.

Beside the score board, let's look at total yards.

OSU - 617 yards ND - 348
LSU - 577 yards ND - 291

These are more lopsided than the score. Charlie Weis is the Wizard of OZ. He sold you and me and all of us fans a bag full of promises. The difference is you still believe in this fairy tale. I don't.

Just win baby!! Whether it's by 1 or 50, who cares. We need a win. Nacy is a solid team, and the game will be competitive. While a blowout would be nice (and better for my blood pressure), let's just win the game. I think ND's talent will shine in this game and they'll gain more confidence after depressing losses to NC/Pitt that resulted in the goose egg against BC. This will hopefully put them back on track.

Honestly, troops, I would have thought last weeks drubbing by BC would have shut the mouths of the Kool-Aid drinkers. This site is starting to sound like liberal web sites that silence the opposition! Notre Dame has become a laughing stock (even worse, irrelevant) and the fat friar needs to go. The trouble is with that gazillion dollar buyout. It ain't happening. We will have to suffer through another year like the rest of the ND faithful (who masquerade as Cub fans)until some rich alumni pony up the dough for fatso's dismissal.

I posted this on BGS also, just getting tired of the Charlie bashing...everything is in place for these kids to succeed, they just have to execute. As for being motivated by their coach, he busts his ass every second for these guys; they play for ND, WTF, why would they need any more motivation than that. I know kids who would do anything to be in their shoes.

My response to Charlie bashers…it is execution!

The deep ball is not there, except the one play during overtime to Floyd against Pitt.

Four interceptions, if I remember correctly, all on long balls into tight coverage, against BC, and a Fumbled Tate punt. When I played, if anyone of us made mistakes like these, we didn’t dare look at the coaches, we looked in the mirror, and we could see ourselves and the person standing behind us waiting to take our spot.

Why all of a sudden is Clausen not getting it? Is it the coaching, I would think not. It is his background and vanity. With all his success in high school, a team that also ran (as in ran the ball) all over every team they played, Clausen was able to look (or should I say stare, telegraph, yell to the receiver off the line, “hey #23 I’m throwing it you long on 2”) Those were the days. We have to start calling him, “ look one way Clausen” or “stare him down Clausen” It is his talent and competitive nature that makes him do this, but the defense is so on to him. He looks right to where he is throwing.

Do you remember Joe Montana’s head; it was on a swivel, split second reads. Now I’m not saying that JC is Joe, but he sure can be, if he becomes a team player and not the selfish “I can thread it between three defenders and get my glory guy,” if he changes then he has a chance to win.

This team would be able to run if linebackers had to think about somebody floating out of the back field, or hitting a slant, or button hook, but do not stare at them, almost directing the route. Look left, look right, fake long, hit Allen in stride 5-7 yards up field, I’d pay good money to see this happen.

I would certainly lay off the Charlie bashing; he is not the problem, although he could become the problem if he doesn’t apply heat to Clausen. Start giving more practice snaps to Sharply or Montana, I can’t take four years of a Powlus type performance.

If Clausen hits Floyd, also I think it was Harrison Smith who had the personal foul after Pitts three and out to start the second half, if these two plays are rectified, Pitt is a win.

If Tate doesn’t fumble and Clausen learns how to quarterback a team instead of trying to create a highlight film, which he did pretty well but for the wrong team, we beat BC.

It’s not the coaching, I would love to play in CW’s system with all the talent that is there and up coming, but if you can’t cut it no matter how heralded you are have to sit down, not saying he should sit now, but some pressure has to be applied to get his head out of his a$$.

What needs to be recognized is that when Charlie was hired, he had a couple of apparent pre-reqs for the job: 1) He was a hard worker who had the enthusiasm and ability to sell Notre Dame to respective recruits; and 2) He knew how to coordinate an offense. The biggest problem was that he had no experience as a college or NFL head coach, which also meant that he had no experience in hiring or overseeing a coaching staff. Thus, 4 years in, the bottom line is that he has pretty much given us what his resume hinted he could bring to the table, and has struggled with his coaching staff. Let's face it the biggest problem with this team isn't Charlie's offensive schemes, its that neither the offensive, nor defensive lines can impose their will against decent teams. When's the last time you actually were confident we could get a 3rd and 2 by running the football?, or that we could stop an opposing offense on 3rd and 2?, or, when's the last time you saw our D-linemen or linebackers burst into the backfield and make a drive-killing sack or tackle for a loss without us having to send 9 guys? Good offenses need to be able to line up on 3rd and 2 and just take what they want without having to resort to gimmickry and good defenses need to be able to go out and proactively stop an offense, rather than playing back on its heels and hoping the other team's offense stops itself with an incomplete pass on 3rd down. The great teams of today (USC, Florida), and the great teams of Notre Dame's past all have/had these qualities. Charlie may be able to get this program where it needs to be, but I think he needs more coaching help, and I think he needs to take a hard look at his O & D-line coaches, as well as the strength coach (its never a good sign when your QB is able to easily out perform your linemen in bench pressing at the NFL combine like Quinn did in '06) and bring some proven assistants in here that can help him bring the "nasty" back to Notre Dame. I admire his loyalty to his coaches, but as we all know, the buck will ultimately stop with the head coach if he isn't willing to recognize the shortcomings of his staff/team and make the necessary changes to improve performance.

How many NCs has ND won in your lifetime, bro? Yale's won 18, but I don't chirp about it because the last one was in 1927, which makes it too removed to be relevant in my book. When is the cutoff for ND? Will you delisional blowhards be talking about NCs in 2020 when you are 32 years removed? 2030 when you are 42 years removes? When is it? Give me a year. In my view, it's now, 20 years removed. Especially when you throw in all that's happenbed since then - the Ron (he'll win 2 Heismans!) Powlus era, the Davie-O'Leary-Willingham-Weis coaching follies, the embrassing green jersey game, the BCS blowouts, the bowl losing streak, the 3-9 season, the loss to Navy last year...stop me if you've had enough.

If you can "still taste all 4," that makes you a pretty old lady, as you would have to be pushing 50 at least. And you still did not answer my question, which is typical. Whem is the cutoff? You can talk all you want about NCs from many, many years ago, but the fact is that going forward BC will probably win as many as ND - 0 - though maybe more as ND will have a tough time winning an NC with its annual beatdown loss to BC. Your NC talk is such a joke, I can't believe how often and how quickly you morons throw that out, especially since half the current team wasn't even born when the '88 team won it.

ND has gone to BCS bowls because they have appeal, and a very flawed bowl system dictated by ticket sales and TV contracts rewards appeal. That places ND in BCS bowls when they are just good enough to ride a soft schedule. It has nothing to do with the merits. If you don't know this, then I am debating these points with a fool who does not understand college football. But are you really happy with those BCS appearances? Getting to face a team that got there by earning it? Getting absolutely embarrassed on a national stage due to the talent disparity? Is that good for the tired ND brand? Getting humiliated? Over and over again? Is that what you idiots want? You folks are weird.

okay...here's the deal

IF WE LOSE TO NAVY TOMORROW...WEIS HAS TO GO.

enough is enough...

we have to stop the bleeding...

All of the great programs have come to this threshold.

Oklahoma...they were god awful...so the brought in...Stoops...bingo...NC

Texas...under Mackovich...awful...what do they do...they bring in Mack Brown...bingo...NC

USC....under Robinson part two and the guy before Poodle...what do they do...they bring in Poodle..and ummm..several NC's.

FLORIDA...under Zootz...they were terrible....they bring in Benedict Arnold...and what happens? bingo...NC

OHIO STATE...they were average under Cooper...couldnt win the big game..so they bring in a guy who was at Younstown state? YOUNGSTOWN STATE I said...and what happens...THE VEST wins a NC...

Look...I understand that we are down...but when do we cry uncle and say..this guy isnt the guy...

If we lose to Navy two years in a row..man..even DAVIE and TY didnt do that...hell..they never lost to NAVY..

we have to say enoughs, enough....I just cant believe NOTRE DAME will accept being average...

It's not a spelling problem, it's a typing problem. I'm done, time to go to bed with dreams of the Navy streak continuing (2 in a row!). You know, Navy used to be good at football, just like ND was.

TO anon 216

I'm talking more about the coach of those teams...

of all the teams I mentioned...they were all great once...and they became great again.

in particular...look at usc

they were down pretty much for 12 years...from 89 to 00 then Caroll comes in and look what happens...

and he was a pro coach with no college exp...so thats not the issue with Charlie

it's that he cant coach...bottem line

we've gotten worse each year..

LETS GO GET GRUDEN...or BRING BACK LOU

who's with me?

We have no business going to any bowl game this year, with that deer in the headlights look that we had last week. Charlie should be given one more year and then let go.

I'm glad we have Charlie. Sure he was deceitful at New England and that benefitted him on the offense, but I like a coach who will push the envelope of the rules to his benefit.

I also like his Bravado. No need for humility. A humble coach never got Notre Dame anything.

I'm glad the administration is fully on board with Coach Weis. I'm glad we are not succumbing to peer pressure and looking to make a change. Just because all the other coaches getting paid as much as Charlie are winning games, doesn't mean we have to get rid of our $3M dollar a year coach. I'm glad the university is telling the rest of the world off, that we're keeping our guy no matter how he produces.

I dearly miss Charlie's predictions and statements of how great he is though. They seemed to have let up as of late. Those were the things that really endeared me to him.

Top Ten Excuses for Charlie Weis

10. The other teams are on steriods (straight from a message board).

9. The referees have it out for us. Every game, every ref, every conf.

8. We were one play away from winning. Yeah, we lost by 17, but that one play would have shifted the momentum.

7. The players aren't executing properly. They're coached well, but can't execute.

6. It's the Offensive Line coaches problem. He can't coach.

5. It's the Special Team's coach fault. We can't kick a field goal. Sure we lost by 17, but had we been able to kick that field goal.

4. Our pep rallys have no energy. The players could feed off that and win the game.

3. We can't bring in JCs. Everyone else can, but we can't. That one JC would make a huge difference.

2. Charlie Jr. is on the side line. He's too distracting.

1. We're a young team. Sure we have Jrs. and Srs., but we're young. Of course we like using the circular argument that we're playing our Soph. and Fresh., but if we had Jrs. and Srs., we'd be winning.

Angry Eagle, worry about your own crappy team, and we'll worry about ours. At least people care about Notre Dame. No one, and I mean no one, gives a damn about BC except a few die hard alumni. Notre Dame is a storied problem that will rise again. BC was, is, and wil always be a mediocre program. Deal with it. Most people can't name a single BC player ever except for maybe Flutie. Congrats, you need to go back almost 25 years to have one player that fans recognize. ND goes 3-9 and more people have heard of their players than in the entire history of BC football. Live with it, tough guy on the internet. The jig is up. Go eat another pizza by yourself in your momma's basement.

Okay...I just finished watching todays game...and I have to be honest...that was the ugliest win I've ever seen.

This team was clueless on special teams..had no discipline, no heart, no fire.

Why in the HELL is the head coach taking the starters out? wtf?

We should've won this game...34 to 7.

End of fricking story.

I am ashamed to be an Irish Fan.

Please god...santa, or whomever god is in charge of the coaches..

Please please please bring me a real coach.

I can't bare to watch my beloved anymore.

Did you see Charlie jump for joy when he barely held on to a win. that should've been a slam it down your throat victory.

What the hell happened to the fire that we once had?

I'm sorry, but to be honest..I almost wish Navy would've pulled it out...

This GUY CANT FRIGGIN COACH..why in the hell are we supporting him?

We all know...ALREADY know that we're gonna lose to USC...since when did we be satisified with a barely win...against a team that we outweigh by 50 lbs??

I feel like I'm on the TITANTIC..with USC being the ICEBERG...

It's embarrassing...even TY and DAVIE beat NAVY EASILY...

We need to cut our losses...NOW...NOW ...NOW...NOW...NOW..

I hate usc so much..and I LOVE MY IRISH..and as an ALUM...I CANT FATHOM ANOTHER BLOW OUT..esp...since I live in Calif

please GOD...I BEG OF YOU...fire this lame ass..so we can get a real fricking coach?

Hey you Navy guys are showing more fight than the "Fighting" Irish. Those losers look like dead men walking. As in when is this season going to be over? As in when is my career going to be over? As in why did I come to this godforsaken place where the team sucks and the fans are so overbearing? Enjoy mediocrity, fellas, can't believe you still gripe about it after 15 years. Should be used to it by now.

Ok, now all you Charlie Weis haters can shut up. It was a must win game and Charlie came through. So all you haters can bite me. Charlie is the future of the greatest university ever. BCS win next year and National Champs in 2010. Mark down my words. He's not perfect, but he will be the one to lead ND back to glory.

Well I am sure that everyone saw the debacle in Baltimore. Toward the end I found myself actually rooting for Navy. When Charlie Jr. wiped the sweat off the old man's brow when the final Navy drive fell short, I believe that told the story of recent ND football, i.e., "Thank God we actually won a game, because I didn't think we had it in us." What a total lack of fire and determination!

Despite some decent running at times and a pretty fair defense throughout, the melt down at the end showed the undisciplined nature of this team. It seemed that toward the end of the 3rd quarter, Charlie wanted to demonstrate that he wasn't going to run up the score. He promptly put in the scrubs and paid the price.

We're in trouble, folks. The QB has thrown 6 interceptions in the last two games, special teams are an embarrassment, and the coaching staff is in total disarray. Our beloved Irish are not even competitive. Notre Dame of old would have blown out this team by 4or 5 touchdowns! Even the folks at CBS were scratching their heads over Swarbrick's curious comments.

honestly? I'd take THE VEST in a heartbeat...

he takes top talent and wins NC or at min..gets them into the big game.

I"m sorry, but we have lost our swagger...we were lucky to win today..and we are a poorly coached team and it shows on the field.

Hell, I'd take Davie or Faust right now...in a friggin heartbeat..and I'm an alum

I dont hate CW..I just love ND too much to see them become a has been and a mediocre team.

I think the Irish players need an attitude check and that Coach Weis needs to start kicking butts and taking names for real, not just play acting like Bill Parcells for the media. I about jumped out of my chair when Toryan Smith dove needlessly into the end zone with that blocked punt today. It was a (Reggie) Bush League play which inevitably drew a stupid penalty. I was chagrined when I saw Robby Parris' smirk on the sideline after he batted Navy's onside kick out of bounds, drawing another dumb penalty and almost costing us the game. Notre Dame had too many stupid penalties to count, like giving Navy a first down when they were punting and letting Navy onside kick from the 45. He didn't do it too much today, but when Golden Tate is tackled he usually spikes the ball or tosses it up high into the air, daring the officials to throw a flag. The Irish players seem to think they can just throw their jockstraps onto the field and the other team will lie down for them. Amazingly, it appears that the players have started to believe their own press clippings before they have any.

i couldnt agree more with the last blogger

but my friend..and I feel like we both love the Irish..

that's BECAUSE OF COACHING...that those players have no respect for the game..no respect for their history and no respect for the coach..

There is no leadership and that comes from the top.

Did you see how disorganized the HANDS TEAM looked...oh my god...

I've seen High School teams better prepared..

I love my irish more than anything..but we have got to admit that it's time to pull the plug on the charlie experiment..

hell..we only gave ty 3 years? and yes I agree Ty was awful..but I believe that even Ty had a better record against winning teams...? am I right?

CHARLIE MUST GO..........NOW..

UNLESS WE BLOW OUT..USC..
