Days initial hires reflected his network and choices. by tdiddy07

Hafley was a Schiano guy. Mattison was an Urban guy. Washington was an Addazio (Urban) and Fickell guy. They tapped into Day's existing network. Yurchich was an independent pick that he plucked from OK St to a key role.

Riley I'm less familiar with. Though it's not clear his staff changes have improved his team over his tenure.

Freeman doesn't have that network. He does have Fickell, who may or may not give him access more broadly to Urban and others. But there is no Brian Kelly tree to pick from. There's no Hazell tree that I'm aware of that bears fruit.

I'm also concerned that the assistant coaching hires are being pushed and led by Jack. It's not clear what freedom Freeman feels he has to go out there and hire important coordinator positions, nor how prepared he is to do that.

There's a lot to like about Freeman. But I think the most important job of the HC is managing staff. And that is a big question mark right now. I think our staff is pretty good. We might shed some dead weight. But I'm not sure Freeman is ready to improve it. Either way, within a couple years he'll need to. Either existing guys will fail or they'll succeed and get promoted. Hopefully he's ready by then. I will be fairly patient with Freeman. He seems like a genuine guy whose heart is in the right place. Either way, worst case scenario, seeing a quality human fail and have to hire again in five years is worth it to watch Kelly get stiffed by assistants and be unburdened from his low-rent snake ass.
