Process and result are two different things by NDAtty

There is a lot of uncertainty with hiring a coach. Some apparent slam dunks don't work out. Sometimes taking a chance does.

Pete Carroll worked out for USC, but that doesn't mean it was because of a genius process where they had some great insight. Works the other way too. Something like Scott Frost to Nebraska seemed about as good as the school could do. Might not work out, but best chance of success given the information at the time.

In my opinion, the best a school can do is have a good process and hire the coach with the best chance of success. However, even the best process and best decision based on info available at the time may not work out. Goes the other way too. Sometimes a school lucks out.

Looking at ND, Freeman may be the next Nick Saban. Maybe ND promotes him and it is a home run. If that happens, I don't think it will be because Jack is some type of genius who can identify Saban-like talent. They'll just have been lucky that the next Nick Saban was on staff when Kelly left. I'd be more than happy to have that type of luck.
