The coaching staff deserves some credit.... by flanner96

I'll share something I posted on Facebook:

Regardless of what happens next weekend and thereafter, ND enjoyed a very good season and the coaching staff deserves credit for making adjustments that allowed the team to improve.
In fact, this year lead to my favorite quote from Brian Kelly ever:
"We were dumb."
He was speaking after the North Carolina game about how the coaching staff had been misusing Jack Coan's talents. And it was refreshing to see, because every ND fan all over the world could easily see that the slow developing runs and passes that the offense was relying on for so much of the early season weren't leading to much at all, and were getting Coan sacked a lot.
"We were dumb" though displayed a level of self-awareness that Brian Kelly, he who blamed his center for not being able to shotgun snap during a literal hurricane, has rarely if ever displayed during his time at Notre Dame. Certainly the Kelly of 7 or 8 years ago would not have uttered that. The Kelly who earlier this season botched John McKay's famous quote about his team's execution likely would not have uttered that.
But, the coaching staff did make some key adjustments this season-- including quicker developing plays, and realizing that they could throw slants. The defensive philosophy also adjusted, relying less on the awkward 3-3-5 alignment that I don't believe has worked for any college team ever, allowing the d's strength, its defensive line, to shine. So instead of needing last-minute heroics to escape Toledo, the team was pasting Georgia Tech by a wider margin than Georgia did.
It's likely that this team has reached its ceiling. The schedule was way way down in quality this year. If they qualify for the playoffs as the 4 seed, ND does not matchup well with Georgia. If they end up in the Fiesta Bowl instead, perhaps they'll find a more favorable matchup.
But regardless of their post season destination, the coaching staff deserves some credit for recognizing their mistakes, and working to correct them during the season. It was a welcome change that paid dividends this year.
