Not quite. The elite remain a constant. ND has better depth by btd

at all 22 positions now than it has had since the Holtz era. DB is a bit of a gap recently, but beyond that we have no holes anywhere depth wise. Kelly shifted his recruiting strategy very overtly -- he gave interviews on it -- to load up quickly on lower ranked 4 star players and get 2-3 players deep at every position with 4 star level players. With few exceptions, that's true across the board now.

What it has translated into is we don't run out of gas during games or end of season anymore. We can survive injuries -- sometimes even multiple injuries at the same position (LB and WR this year).

The gap we have with the elite is we aren't landing elite players. Our count of the very top 4 star players and 5 star players is dramatically lower than the elite teams -- especially skill position offensive players.

Freeman is helping in this area on the defensive side. Offensively, we are arguably a tiny notch up at WR from the average of 10 years, but we aren't landing Rocket, Brown, Watters, Bettis, etc type talent.
