Good point. "Incapable" was the wrong word. by rockmcd

You're right, I contradicted myself by saying BC was incapable of beating FSU. BC was a ranked team that year and their upset win over Miami on the Flutie hail Mary was still fresh in people's minds (not that Miami was a title contending team that year, but fair enough).

Let me try again:
Based on the results of all the games, FSU appeared to be the more dominant team. In games against opponents who had 2 or 3 losses (not counting that game), FSU beat Clemson 57-0, beat UNC 33-7, and beat Miami 28-10. Meanwhile, Notre Dame played two such opponents, beating Michigan 27-23 and losing to BC 41-39. ND also beat USC (who had 4 other losses but was still formidable) 31-13. In the remaining regular season games, the closest call that FSU had was 26 points, while ND had 17 and 15 point margins over teams that finished with only 1 and 2 wins, respectively. So that's a pretty clear trend establishing that FSU's 1993 squad was much less likely than ND to let a competent yet inferior team like BC hang around.

My point isn't to relitigate the 1993 AP and Coaches polls, I'm just saying that we should look at ALL the games. Your post suggests that if you beat a team then that creates a Chinese wall insulating you from being ranked lower than that opponent until you lose at least two games. I don't agree with that at all, especially when home field advantage is a factor.
