On Coan by UpperEastSideIrish

I think he’s a solid, but not spectacular player. He’s clearly smart and has a big arm. He also misses some open guys and takes way too long to make a decision. With an O-line like ours, you need to know where it’s going pre-snap and have it out when your back foot makes its last step. You aren’t going to have a lot of plays where you have tons of time. Remember, the fellow we played today didn’t play too great - and he took Coan’s job.

More to the point, I think we’ve seen in the last few years that Kelly’s offense works only if you have a quarterback with mobility. If we counted up how many times Book took a 3rd and 6 with no options and scampered out of bounds to get a new set of downs, you’d get a high number. Coan isn’t that player. He makes throws Book can’t, but he’s not the right guy for this offense.

I would go so far as to say that even if Buchner can’t go next week, we’re going to need a fair amount of Pyne. After he came in, there was just one 3rd down play when he ran out of the pocket, bought himself time and found a player across the line to gain. We ended up punting, but it showed Wisconsin something that they hadn’t seen. Suddenly, they had to defend a zone read, a boot leg, or a plain old qb keeper.

The problems with Kelly’s 1996-style offense have been written about endlessly on this page. But the fact is his offense is what we have and we mind as well give ourselves our best shot to win against a really good Cincinnati team. I can’t see how we do that without a mix of quarterbacks.
