The last time we met by SixShutouts66

Ara's first game as Notre Dame coach was in 1964 at Camp Randall Stadium. He had taken over a team that was 2-7-1 the previous year, although that team would have had a respectable record if it had had a mediocre offense. Many changes had occurred since the end of the season, and fans were enthusiastic but apprehensive.

The team had left the hotel that morning to a large Irish crowd, prompting Tom Pagna telling Ara that"We're not in Evanston anymore". A full house was at the game under a gloomy and drizzly sky.

The game started slowly with ND kicking a short field goal near the end of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter the Huarte to Snow passing combination burst onto the consciousness of America with a 61 yard TD pass. Another short field goal led to a 13-0 halftime lead.

At the start of the second half Wisconsin marched down the field and Wisconsin scored a TD on a pass when their QB was past the line of scrimmage, an omen of other officiating calls later. ND would score two clinching TDs, one after a very short punt and one after another defensive stop. Scoring concluded with a 42 yard Huarte to Snow pass.

Huarte passed for 270 yards in his debut, surpassing the season's passing leader of the previous year. Snow caught 9 of those passes for 211 yards.

A precursor to the 1966 championship season was the stellar play of the ND defense. Wisconsin was held to -51 yards (the minus sign was NOT a typo), partly because sack yardage was counted against rushing yardage. ND outgained Wiscy 419-173.

The dream season continued until the second half of the final game against USC when a 15 yard phantom holding penalty erased a TD. (Holding calls were penalized 15 yards at that time).

Memories are sweet, but they mean little if we only have memories to recall of the series. As Harv says - Go Irish
