Last night was BK in microcosm... by Scoop80

It was another in a long line of wins that left us feeling flat afterwards. Far too often, a win is closer than it needed to be and/or BK's boorish behavior leaves a sour aftertaste. Last night featured both.

Hopefully, Norvell's liberal use of the transfer portal means that this year's FSU team is not the dumpster fire that their last 4 teams (21-26 cumulative) were. Hopefully, ND's OL will jell as a unit in the coming weeks. Hopefully, Freeman will be more judicious in his use of the 3-3-5 defense.

Even if all of those "hopefullys" come to fruition, however, there still were far too many of the Same S**t Different Day hallmarks of Kellyism. Burned TO's, poor clock management, questionable play calls (esp. w/ flea flicker), poor tackling--we've all seen that movie before. Thankfully, the purple face is largely gone (except when it was clearly merited in response to the dubious running into the kicker call). The BK we've all come to know and disrespect, however, came to the forefront in his postgame interview.

The execution of a famous quip from a HC who did have a knack for them was utterly flawed. More importantly, the underlying message that the problem is with his players, not w/ him, came through again. It's unrealistic to expect your players to give their all for you when you publicly belittle their efforts in order to protect your ego.

I honestly hope that Savvy doesn't play up BK's 106th claimed ND win. For starters, there are 21 wins that aren't recognized by the NCAA. More importantly, we all recognize the multiple personal and professional differences between BK and Rockne. There will be an empty feeling that will have some similarities to Bonds passing Aaron's HR mark.

In year 12, the fault is mine if I expect anything different. Like many here, I have decades of emotional investment in this program. It is an interest that I share w/ countless people who mean something to me. While I don't currently plan on paying to watch the Toledo game, I will continue to follow this program w/ more fervor than I probably should. At least my expectations will be based in reality.
