...more accurate to say that he lied by omission on Day 1 (when he knew that the veracity of his resume was in question but he didn't come clean about the phony degree) before coming clean on Day 2 when specifically prompted to do so.

I get all the arguments against termination as the right move, but ultimately the combination of a faked academic credential (even acknowledging that the credential had nothing whatsoever to do with the person's role) and the initial lie by omission is pretty damning.
