In HS at least, scarring on the OL's helmet was a tell by ndgotrobbedin97

If an O lineman had a ton of scarring on the front of his helmet, it told me he had limited athleticism/agility and had to lead with his head as a battering ram. Guys with better technique/athleticism didn't tend to have nearly as much scarring/paint wear on their helmets. Invariably, the scars foretold more concussions.

And, I'd say most of these oafs didn't make it past D3, if that, so you probably didn't see it as much in college.

Being allowed to use your hands in HS has changed the HS game (for the better).
