I assume that the phrase is a summary of what they... by Kbyrnes

...are (misleadingly) told during recruitment.

"You can get a job with one of our big backers here in Ohio! [e.g., become a porter at the biggest dealership in Columbus...or at least Akron]"

For ND's superior educational opportunity and thus the much-touted 40-year decision, one has to assume that this concept resonates significantly with recruits and their parents. My gut feeling is that it obviously resonates with some (like our players), but probably doesn't with others.

I think Kelly could do a lot better at recruiting, at developing talent once it's in house, and in properly deploying the talent he has--we are significantly underachieving in all those areas.

However, I think it'd probably be an overstatement to say that we are at no institutional disadvantage at all compared to a place that offers a comfy, academically unchallenging tour of duty.

EDIT: I agree with Jvan's idea--maybe we won't get the same volume of 5 and 4 stars as OSU and Alabama, but we could get more than we do. If we can narrow the talent gap,1 then perhaps we really could, in a given game, knock off Alabama as we used to and strive realistically for a national championship again.

1..and improve development and deployment...
