It’s a two prong issue, talent and scheme. The offensive talent is pretty close except for two positions, qb and receiver. We’ve had the type of receiver talent recently, we just don’t have a Claypool, Tate, Floyd on the roster right now. Our line, tight ends and rb’s are very strong. With two receivers that can stretch the field and a qb that can get them the ball we would have the talent to become a dominant offense along the lines of Alabama and Clemson. The single biggest issue is the lack of a dynamic qb. Despite the lack of a game breaking receiver, we had receivers open and Book just couldn’t get them the ball.

Second issue is scheme. I will leave the analysis of this to those with more knowledge, but it did appear as though there was improvement under Rees.

As for defense, it also appears to come down to two positions, cornerback and defensive tackle. We had a freshman covering the best receiver in the country. We need the run stopping, 300 + defensive tackle that can clog the run game like Nix, etc.. That’s the biggest difference when I see the elite teams. Their interior d line is as big as our o line.

So to a degree, I do believe we are close. However, Kelly’s inability to recognize these deficiencies and correct them makes it seem we are so far away. In the end, it comes down to qb- with an elite level qb last night would have been a different game. Is there any position on the roster that has had less top level talent start during Kelly’s tenure than qb?
