There are two coaches who we know for sure could break by Raoul
that ceiling: Meyer and Saban. Everyone else would be a risk and probably would need help from the current administration. And frankly I don't think the administration would hire either Meyer or Saban.
Hiring Holtz in 1985 was a bit like a "hiring a Meyer" move (though things were very different monetarily then). It was probably seen as throwing raw meat to the rabble by the administration. It was a necessity back then and the administration understood that. But the administration no longer sees the need to feed that "beast." In fact, the beast embarrasses them (i.e. the first 75 years of football success). They have taken a very different path the last 30 years and are fine with it. Football National Championships are not important in the administration's hierarchy of needs.
