Depending on when we play and how our seasons go up until by SWPaDem

that point (and, of course, that the Jurk gets his waiver), you may be onto something.

For what it's worth, Kelly wanted Phil to stay (as did Phil) - they met and Kelly had a hard time believing that Phil would leave with three years of eligibility remaining - but Kelly could not give Phil sufficient assurance/reassurance that he'd get any meaningful playing time this year (just like last year), particularly with Tommy calling the shots on offense.

In addition, there were disparaging statements made by Chip Long and Tommy about Phil which went beyond the team and left a bitter taste. Basically, Phil saw no future at ND with Tommy in charge and Kelly taking a back seat which gives one a pretty good idea of who's the leading candidate to take Kelly's place when he finally steps down several years from now.

Now this part is total conjecture, but I believe that Long's sudden departure at the end of the regular season had something to do with trying to keep Phil in the fold. Tommy certainly wasn't going to be the one to go.

Phil has walked into an excellent opportunity at BC with new head coach Jeff Hafley and offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti (both of whom have college as well as NFL experience). And if I remember right, Hafley also brought two other coaches from Ohio State's staff with him. Phil has walked into a much better situation with regard to coaching than he would ever have at ND. I just hope the kid gets the waiver so that he can strut his stuff this season. Besides, it would set up The Jurk v. The Jerk game quite nicely.

What's linked is more or less the start of this story.
