• Please do not copy entire articles into your post; rather, provide links to them.. We are now links-only for ALL Internet publications. If only a small portion of the article pertains to your post, Fair Use allows you to copy those one or two paragraphs, provided you cite the author's name and the publication for which he writes. Otherwise, put a link in the HTTP Link box.
• Even if you're copying a reference to an article, provide a link to the page from which the article came. We're trying to cut down on duplicate topics, and the posting process will check the link to your article to see if it's already being discussed on this board. At the very least, you'll save yourself some grief on the boards.

I wonder if college sports are going to matter anymore - by ndhouston

The economics of major college athletics are, at best, flimsy for all but the top 40 or so programs that field major college football teams. And even those programs are only a canceled season or two away from financial ruin.

The NFL is already cutting back due to the financial cliff they face due to COVID, the divisive national anthem protests, as well as the fact that youth football is dying due to the CTE concerns.

The NBA now has a viable option for non-college player development (the international leagues do as well). The basketball industry does not need Duke or Kentucky in order to generate worldwide interest in the sport.

Hockey was always a regional sport, and, similar to baseball, they have a viable minor league system.

Collegiate soccer is important for the development of the women's game, but it is completely unnecessary for the men's game. Really good soccer players can develop their skills far more effectively in the European club system.

COVID portends a college sports reckoning similar to WW2. Some of the big names will survive, but the whole college sports landscape will be destroyed and reconstituted in this pandemic.

Oddly enough, baseball clearly has the best model from a college/pro perspective. I wonder if it will be adopted for all of the other sports.
