Speaking of coal, the northern half of Pitt Stadium by SWPaDem

was built over a coal mine while the southern half was built on embankment. At least one of the entrances/exits at midpoint actually passed through old mine workings of the Pittsburgh Coal seam - which fueled Pittsburgh's steel industry back in the day. Pretty cool if you ever had the opportunity to see it.

And as you may remember, the last game ever played at Pitt Stadium before they tore it down was a 37-27 win over Notre Dame coached by a hapless Bob Davie. Pitt students actually gave the demolition a head start when they tore down both sets of goalposts with nine seconds left in the game. I along with my son, daughter, and dad were witnesses to that semi-historic affair of dubious distinction.

Sucked to be a Notre Dame fan that day - not that there weren't other days when it sucked to be a Notre Dame fan too.
