I think athletics are part of the educational mission for the student athletes and the schools should do their best to allow their athletes to train and compete even if many or all of their fellow, non-athlete students aren’t on campus. Schools can meet 80-90% of their obligations to regular students via distance learning but largely fail to deliver any value to their athletes without being together on campus. With fewer students on campus, there is an opportunity to make conditions safer for the athletes. If that can be done in a financially responsible way, then I think schools should be able to have their athletes on campus training and competing (while otherwise distance learning like their fellow students).
