If he's not good enough to see the field in a meaningful way this year, getting him the extra year of eligibility will let him either spend a fifth year at ND if he feels he wants to stay and his skills have developed, or it will give him the opportunity to get his degree from ND and then transfer to another, less competitive school where he might actually get to start for his final year without having to sit out a year for transferring. And if he never develops and gets burned out on football, he can get his degree and get a real job in four years, and leave that final year of eligibility behind.
