Right Kinda Cracks

  • I’m pleased to get the win but not particularly impressed by it… for the eighth time this season.

  • “We're ascending as a football team,'' Kelly said after the game. ''Any time you try to put a resume together, it's about how you play later in the year.” Translation: Ignore the Cincinnati loss, playoff committee.

  • I’m hard pressed to think of a Notre Dame football player I’ve enjoyed watching more than Kyren Williams.

  • Fun stat of the day: Williams had 70 yards rushing. 67 of those yards came after contact.

  • Jay Woolfolk, Virginia’s freshman quarterback who played instead of injured starter Brennan Armstrong, is a talented young man; but his inexperience had more to do with holding the Cavaliers to three points than Notre Dame’s defense did.

  • A popular NIL deal allows paying customers to play online video games against their favorite players. Logan Diggs took it a step farther, merging live action and a video game with control to the highest bidder.

  • Most college football fans have seen the crazy ending of the South Dakota - South Dakota State game by now. I understand what SD State coach John Stiegelmeier thought he was doing, but punting the ball out of bounds was the better option. It would have taken about as much time as the pass; and even if a rushed punt only covered 15-20 yards the desperation heave couldn’t have come close to the end zone.

  • I’m giving Florida my Pinkel Award nomination this week. Playing 1-AA Samford this late in the season is bad enough, but letting Samford score 50 points is a remarkable display of self-debasement.

  • Many have mentioned the stat this weekend; but because I first heard it from him, I’m going to give ABC’s Dave Pasch my Hardin Award nomination for citing the nominally true but worthless note about 22 top ten teams losing this season. The stat is supposed to tell us what a wild season we’re enjoying, but that isn’t its relevance. What the stat really tells us is that early season polls are worthless. We haven’t seen many poor teams beating good teams. We have seen poor teams beating other poor teams that happen to be ranked in the top ten.

  • Examples of top ten teams that lost in this “remarkable” year for upsets are Iowa, Florida, Texas A&M, North Carolina, and Penn State. Having seen those teams play through week 11, it’s laughable that any of them were ranked in the top ten.

  • Remember when Miami and Florida State played to see which team would have a shot at the national championship? Now they play to see which team sucks more.

  • Very nice game by Bo Bauer who looks the part of a guy named Bo Bauer.

  • Filed under the category of things I never want to see again: Jack Coan carrying the ball on fourth and one when Kyren Williams is an option.

  • The Irish got a football win, a hockey sweep vs. Wisconsin, and a pair of basketball wins. Add winning the conference championship game for men’s soccer and a win in the NCAA women’s soccer tournament, and you have one of the best sports weekends at Notre Dame in a long time.

  • I’m pleased to get the win but not particularly impressed by it… for the eighth time this season.

  • Remind me again what happened in the other two.

  • “We're ascending as a football team,'' Kelly said after the game. ''Any time you try to put a resume together, it's about how you play later in the year.” Translation: Ignore the Cincinnati loss, playoff committee.

  • Translated from the original Davie-ese: “You can tell a well-coached team by whether it wins in November.”

  • I’m hard pressed to think of a Notre Dame football player I’ve enjoyed watching more than Kyren Williams.

  • Kyren causes a lot of Irish smiles both because he gets a lot of opportunities and because of what he does with them. If I have to make a comparison, Golden Tate didn’t get as many opportunities, but his SPC ratio (smiles per catch/carry) had to be right up there.

  • Fun stat of the day: Williams had 70 yards rushing. 67 of those yards came after contact.

  • I bet that, just once, Kyren would like to find out what it’s like to get lots of yards before contact…. Another fun stat: ND recorded 7 sacks while giving up none.

  • Jay Woolfolk, Virginia’s freshman quarterback who played instead of injured starter Brennan Armstrong, is a talented young man; but his inexperience had more to do with holding the Cavaliers to three points than Notre Dame’s defense did.

  • I think that’s fair, but I also think that the gawdy numbers that Armstrong had been putting up were an artifact of UVa’s putrescent schedule. (I’m looking at you, William & Mary, Illinois, the entire ACC.)

  • A popular NIL deal allows paying customers to play online video games against their favorite players. Logan Diggs took it a step farther, merging live action and a video game with control to the highest bidder.

  • Chicks dig the Diggs cheat code.

  • I think it was a brilliant ploy by Coach Stiegelmeier to make the whole country aware that South Dakota State actually had a football team.

  • I’m giving Florida my Pinkel Award nomination this week. Playing 1-AA Samford this late in the season is bad enough, but letting Samford score 50 points is a remarkable display of self-debasement.

  • That may be the high point of Florida’s season---snatching a Pinkel nomination from Alabama, who appeared to be a lock this week. How bad are the Gators this year? They are an early 8-point underdog to Missouri, the birthplace of the Pinkel Award.

  • Speaking of poor teams beating other poor teams, when I heard this stat I knew I had to post it here, not because it’s Hardin-worthy, but because it’s too good not to savor. Kansas shocked Texas, defeating the Longhorns 57-56 in overtime. Not only was it the Jayhawks’ first ever win in Austin, but it was the first time they had won a game as a 24-point or greater underdog in 100 tries, going back to 1978. Conversely, Texas had not lost a game as a 24-point or greater favorite in 79 tries, also going back to 1978. The football gods have a sense of humor.

  • Examples of top ten teams that lost in this “remarkable” year for upsets are Iowa, Florida, Texas A&M, North Carolina, and Penn State. Having seen those teams play through week 11, it’s laughable that any of them were ranked in the top ten.

  • Reviewing the schedule it seems unlikely, but there’s still time for the Irish to join the club.

  • Remember when Miami and Florida State played to see which team would have a shot at the national championship? Now they play to see which team sucks more.

  • Well…

  • Very nice game by Bo Bauer who looks the part of a guy named Bo Bauer.

  • Bauer played so well, he scored a sweet NIL deal, too.

  • Filed under the category of things I never want to see again: Jack Coan carrying the ball on fourth and one when Kyren Williams is an option.

  • Short yardage running (or any kind of running) isn’t Coan’s strong suit. What is his strong suit is running the two minute drill, yet when the Irish had the opportunity to do so at the end of the first half, Kelly demurred.

  • The Irish got a football win, a hockey sweep vs. Wisconsin, and a pair of basketball wins. Add winning the conference championship game for men’s soccer and a win in the NCAA women’s soccer tournament, and you have one of the better sports weekends at Notre Dame in a long time.

  • Plus, the women’s volleyball team swept NC State, and Molly Seidel won a free tank of gas on a Lotto scratch-off ticket.

  • I’m pleased to get the win but not particularly impressed by it… for the eighth time this season.

One impressive win and a loss… Could be a country song.

I thought it was the special teams.

If SPC ratio ever morphs into the LPC ratio (laughs), it’s getting a Hardin Nomination.

  • Fun stat of the day: Williams had 70 yards rushing. 67 of those yards came after contact.

  • I bet that, just once, Kyren would like to find out what it’s like to get lots of yards before contact…. Another fun stat: ND recorded 7 sacks while giving up none.

Step by step, inch by inch, the offensive line is getting better. I wonder if saying “Niagara Falls” around them would complete the transformation..

I thought Gary Pinkel retired. Is he Virginia’s coach now?

  • A popular NIL deal allows paying customers to play online video games against their favorite players. Logan Diggs took it a step farther, merging live action and a video game with control to the highest bidder.

  • Chicks dig the Diggs cheat code.

    More precisely, chicks Diggs Logan.

  • I think it was a brilliant ploy by Coach Stiegelmeier to make the whole country aware that South Dakota State actually had a football team.

Oh, they have football; but football isn’t a sight word when discussing the school.

    Dan Mullen...

  • Many have mentioned the stat this weekend; but because I first heard it from him, I’m going to give ABC’s Dave Pasch my Hardin Award nomination for citing the nominally true but worthless note about 22 top ten teams losing this season. Conversely, Texas had not lost a game as a 24-point or greater favorite in 79 tries, also going back to 1978. The football gods have a sense of humor.

I’m sure Texas is looking forward to getting away from the Big 12 bullies and moving on to the SEC.

Don’t laugh. Those are next year’s Shamrock Series uniforms.

  • Remember when Miami and Florida State played to see which team would have a shot at the national championship? Now they play to see which team sucks more.

  • Well…

Some fodder for their bands’ halftime shows...

  • Very nice game by Bo Bauer who looks the part of a guy named Bo Bauer.

  • Bauer played so well, he scored a sweet NIL deal, too.

    So many opportunities.

Things that make you want to say, “Bob Davie vs Nebraska in Notre Dame Stadium.

Now, if only Skylar Diggins-Smith’s invitation to join ND’s Olympic participants for honors a few weeks ago would arrive in the mail, we’d have a successful sports week.
