Throughout Brian Kelly’s time as head coach.

Last night, after FSU closed to 38-25, ND took over on its own 25 yard line with 5:56 left in the game. An offside penalty on the Seminoles set us up 1st and 5 from the 30. There was 5:26 left at this point. A one yard gain by Kyren Williams left ND 2nd and 4. 25 seconds elapsed. On 2nd and 4, Coan threw incomplete to Mayer. 5 seconds elapsed on that play, setting up 3rd and 4. Coan was sacked for a 7 yard loss. We punted the ball back to FSU who took over on their own 29 with 4:16 left. They had all three of their time outs. ND burned 1:21 off the clock on the three and out. Coan didn’t even let the play clock run down to single digits.

It happens again and again with Kelly. I just don’t understand how that can still be a problem 12 years in.

two check-down passes for about 5 total yards burning clock (when we didn't want to) and then a time-out. Turns out we punt with :44 left. 3 timeouts and 30 yards from FG range, FSU had no confidence in their QB and runs out the clock

I don't understand the 3rd and 4th down passes short of the 1st down marker either unless there is a ton of clear sailing ahead.

Even worse was the combination of TO and play call on 3rd

down. We threw a long fade route that could have left us plenty of time if it had been completed whether we used the timeout or not. Seemed like a timeout was used to save time for a methodical scoring drive in the last minute.

They snapped the 2nd and 4 play with 25 seconds on the play

Clock. Even if Mayer catches it and snags a first down, it would have been a wasted opportunity to milk 8-9 % of the game clock

Probably what bothers me most about Kelly. We

never work the play clock when running out the clock. 3 running plays and 45 seconds per play and we take over 2 minutes off the clock or force them to use time outs.
