If we go 9-1 with a loss to Clemson and Clemson wins out

Which is the model most are presupposing, we most likely would go to the ACC Championship game, although it's at least theoretically possible that we would not. NC State is the only ACC team that doesn't play either us or Clemson. If they were to win out (unlikely), that would knock us out of the conference championship game; if they go 9-1 (also unlikely), it would come down to conference tiebreakers. It's also theoretically possible under that model that either Miami, Virginia or Virginia Tech finishes at 9-1 in conference play (they all play each other, so it would be a maximum of one of those teams). In that case, it would also come down to conference tiebreakers.

To answer the larger question, I believe the conference championship game is tied into the ACC television deal, so I doubt we could back out of it.
