they win almost every damn game. Unfortunately, the only person who doesn't seem to get it is Brian Kelly. I know that a win like today doesn't make Kelly look as smart as does a 54-43 win with 550 passing yards, but even for him the feeling right now has to be pretty good, doesn't it? As was said below, had we committed to this gameplan all year, we might be playing on the 1st.
Because I don't think Kelly really cares if he 'looks smart' in victory. He seems, to me, the kind of guy who would chew off his right arm to win a football game.
And given our suspensions and injuries on defense, I don't think there is any way we would have been a playoff team, regardless of the offensive gameplan. It likely would have been a better overall season though.
he's always been in love with big chunk plays. He can't help himself. One particular O-lineman I spoke with would get so frustrated when they were dominating the LOS and just bowling teams over, BK would still want the deep ball even though they could pound it down the other team's throat.
I don't expect he'll ever change, as he's had a few games at ND where he's had success with this formula, but he always reverts to his bullshit.
Run the fucking ball to set up the pass. Control the clock. Keep the defense off the field. Win the game. before today.
and we needed a last second field goal to win.
The defense is historically awful. Simply running to control the clock was no guarantee that we'd win the game.
chance to win. He finally tried it. He does that against NW, Louisville, ASU, USC....we might have ended up 10-2 instead of 7-5.....but wins aren't important. Running his Xbox offense is the goal.
Watching the game it was frustrating that we hadn't run more often during the course of the year. The o-line played great today and I'm glad he finally played to that strength.
However, I think it's silly to blame everything that happened this year on the offense. The defense is really, really bad and no matter how much we controlled the clock we still were unable to stop teams.
Blame should fall on both sides of the ball.
BK does, however, have control over the offensive gameplan every week. And he consistently failed in that regard. So the defense was bad - that gives the offense an excuse to have bullshit playcalling? What is your point?
He could have called every game like he did today and I doubt we'd be in the playoffs.
...we showed we could be physical and if not dominate up front on O, to toe to toe. Lord knows why we only drag this type of game plan out once or twice a year.
Zaire also did very well.
ND went from being dominant and capable of beating FSU to falling apart at the seams, and only part of that was coaching. Injuries and a full on breakdown from Golson really cost us this season.
They would have won at least 2 more games. A 9-3 record with all of the injuries would have not been a horrible season
I have to admit this win feels a lot bigger than beating a team that will end the year unranked. Outside of FSU not sure we have a game that a victory would be more respected.
For those who want to get rid of BK I can't really think of two more solid games from ND than FSU and LSU this year. For those who love we had that month of hell.
