"I think this comes down to a comparison of ceilings and floors. At this point, Riley has a higher ceiling than BK, but he probably also has a lower floor (even though his teams have finished ahead of BK's ND teams in 3 of the last 4 years). After 12 years of BK failing to break through whatever glass ceiling is holding him back, however, I'd rather take a crack at a guy with more upside potential."

To his credit, Kelly has eliminated the "trip & fall" games against teams with worse talent. He deserves credit for that.

To his detriment, Kelly still hasn't shown he can get teams ready for the games that matter most. Riley's teams have performed much better in playoff games than Kelly's teams. No, he hasn't won one yet, but he seems much closer to a breakthrough than Kelly.

On the recruiting front, since 2017, Riley has signed more 4/5-star QBs than Brian Kelly, more 4/5-star WRs than Brian Kelly, and more 4/5-star RBs than Brian Kelly. And those positions tend to be the ones that cause us to faceplant in big games.
