One could argue though that this was the perfect year to do exactly what he is (maybe) trying to do. A year of non-contention where there is the freedom to plant seeds which will (theoretically) lead to higher yields. Short games in conflict with long games occur all the time. You play a high ceiling freshman QB over a high floor junior even if there is an immediate pain. I'm not saying anything insightful, of course.

It's funny because I remember a posting here in the offseason where Freeman was quoted essentially saying that if someone talented can't fit in the scheme, there needs to be a way to get them involved. An argument for the malleability you espouse. I guess I can very much agree that a great coach can both adapt and then pivot more or less seamlessly. But I'm not sure the inability to do so is a felony. Nor is eschewing it always the wrong move.
