The LB recruiting gap is self-inflicted, right? by StetsonDan

My understanding of the linebacker recruiting gap is that the staff specifically chose to take only Prince Kollie at linebacker in '21 (Kia is a weakside defensive end) and no linebackers in '20 (Botehlo is a weakside defensive end). It's also my understanding that ND turned down '20 LB recruit Cody Simon (4* now starting for Ohio State and younger brother of current ND player Shayne Simon).

I remember many posters saying in '19 and '20 that this recruiting gap would come back and bite us with the lack of young depth at linebacker.

I assume that decision was mainly Kelly's rather than Lea's because Kelly should have the final say on roster/recruiting class composition. I don't think it was a situation of Lea failing to successfully recruit linebackers -- it was the staff decided we didn't need linebackers.
