He still is a work in progress by Jvan

Talk about Freeman as a head coach in waiting is premature.

On the plus side, he has injected energy into a moribund and unremarkable coaching staff. The effect on recruiting is most obvious from a public standpoint. We can't see inside the locker room, but this year's team has appeared to be focused and unified.

The downside is that Freeman's defensive schemes haven't always worked. This is not a crime, but he has doubled down on strategies that clearly weren't working. You can't afford to be stubborn in this business.

This leads into the other area where he is clearly behind his predecessor. We could always count on Clark Lea to make smart adjustments at halftime. Last year's game against North Carolina was a case in point, but there are several others. This year, Freeman has not had the same positive impact. In fact, North Carolina came out in the third quarter two weeks ago and put together two long scoring marches before Kyren Williams turned the game around with his 91-yard run. Carolina didn't quit, adding another 75-yard scoring drive after Williams' TD.

That's just one isolated comparison with Lea but I haven't seen the same high quality game day coaching from Freeman just yet.
