Thread hijack: Meeting his brother, Tony Brooks by Otter

I lived next door to two freshman football players when I was a sophomore. George Williams and Lincolin Coleman. George famously would end up pressuring QB Steve Walsh on Miami's two pt conversion, knocked down by Pat Terrell in the 31-30 "Game of the Century"

In any event, I guess the freshman football players were pretty close and Tony Brooks and Ricky Watters would regularly come visit us in Grace Hall. We had air conditioning and Watters and Brooks did not. Watters lived in Fisher. Not sure where Brooks lived.

Even as student I followed ND recruiting and I knew both of the RBs were big recruiting gets for ND. My roomates and I asked both Watters and Brooks about their recruitment.

Watters recounted that Joe Paterno was an asshole and basically implied that his life would be miserable living in Central PA if he didn't go to Penn State. He said that Penn State coaches stirred up the local radio hosts to pressure him, but that made him more resolute to go to ND.

When we talked to Tony Brooks, he talked about his recruiting process. He talked about Lou and his discussions with Lou about spatting his shoes if he came to ND. I never knew that taping up your shoes was such a big deal, but Brooks would have gone elsewhere if Lou and told him no.

Finally, Brooks was from Oklahoma (I believe) and we asked him if he was recruited by the Sooners. He responded "Oh yeah. Let me tell you...Switzer came to my crib."

That comment is the reason that I hijacked this thread. I will never forget how clueless my whitebread self was about that lingo. I grew up in the burbs and despite having MTV I had never heard the term "crib" used that way before.

I thought that Tony was saying that Barry Switzer literally came to visit his house when he was a baby. And I wasn't the only one. Another kid in the room said he thought the same thing. I was thinking that Switzer must pegged the father as a world class athlete or something if he was laying the groundwork for a newborn to come to OU.

Anyway...yeah.
