And before Holtz’s Heroes he was the Assistant AD by Moff

re Alumni Relations. Before that he was with the Monogram Club for a while. If he worked on IT at ND, it must have been a long time ago.

I wholeheartedly agree that Reggie is a really great guy and is universally admired and respected by his fellow former players and everyone else that knows him, so a perfect fit for his past and present roles. I got to visit with him a few times at the Holtz’s Heroes events and reunion during the Purdue game weekend this year. There was a great turnout thanks to him and the other former players that help run the organization. They put together a great program at the brunch Saturday morning, with Jack Nolan interviewing Coach Holtz, Tim Brown, and the Rocket on stage. Just two of the many legends from that era that were in attendance. After it was over, I asked Coach Holtz if he ever daydreams about having both Tim and Rocket on the field at the same time. He smiled and said, “sure, but the problem is I only had one football!”

When I got home from that weekend, I picked up a few copies of Reggie’s book, including one for my son who was quite eager to receive it after meeting Reggie. I’ve really enjoyed it and have learned a lot. I never knew just how sick he was in the 1992 USC game, but nonetheless ran wild on USC between nearly collapsing on the sideline. There’s also a nice foreword by Jerome Bettis.

If anyone is so inclined and is looking for a good place to direct your ND donation(s), there are a few different ways to give to the Holtz’s Heroes 501(3)(C) Foundation and I’m sure Reggie, Coach Holtz, et al would greatly appreciate it. There is the Bobby Satterfield Fund to assist the families of former players who have passed away or who have serious health issues or the like. I was inspired to give to that after this reunion. There is also a scholarship fund for the kids of former players and for other unrelated but deserving students who apply to ND and need financial assistance. One of those students, with no prior connection to ND, spoke at the brunch. She was so impressive she ended up getting more than one standing ovation. There is a Holtz’s Heroes website (formerly Lou’s Lads) with a page to give.

They also helped Muffet McGraw’s foundation assemble literally tons of food for food banks though, among other things, a cornhole tournament on the Bookstore Courts that weekend. So Reggie and the guys are doing a lot of good work, in that case also in conjunction with The Bread of Life food drive org.
