2 key events seem to have contributed to their decline by Xman

1. Mike Bloomgren was their longstanding OL coach since 2011, and soon added offensive coordinator to his OL duties. The last year he was at Stanford in 2017, Bryce Love and the OL gashed for 2118 rushing yards and a Heisman runner up. Bloomgren left after 2017 to become HC at Rice. The OL and offense have not been the same since

2. Strength and conditioning coach Shannon Turley came with Harbaugh in 2007 and instantly helped change the program. All of a sudden, they were smashmouth, and "Turley’s conditioning initiatives in the Stanford football program have dramatically reduced player injury rates. From 2006-2013, there was an 87 percent decrease in the number of games missed because of injury on Stanford’s roster. "

Turley was fired abruptly in 2019 with no reason given. I heard a couple of rumors, but I don't want to write them, since the internet has a way of setting things in stone. It looks like he was out of work for 2 years, but just landed the same job at Colorado.

Bottom line: the departure of those 2 key coaches likely is a major contributor to the steady decline
