Pretty sound argument. I'm sure the players would agree by gregmorrissey

Final playoff rankings from 2014-2019 are in the linked post. 2020 are here.

I'm certain all of those players on teams ranked 5-10 would totally agree with you that having the opportunity to compete on the field for a championship is totally bad for college football. I'm sure they much prefer the "opportunity" to play in a meaningless exhibition game. And, before you reply that "they could have proven it on the field in the regular season", please review the number of undefeated champions for the last 20 years.

Here are the undefeated regular seasons of arguably the greatest coaches over that time.

Urban Meyer 2 times (2004 Utah & 2012 Ohio State (probation))

Nick Saban 4 times (2009 Alabama & 2020 Alabama / 2016 & 2018 lost NC game both years as only loss)

Dabo Swinney 3 times (2018 Clemson / 2015 & 2019 lost NC game as only loss)

Pete Carroll 2 times (2004 / 2005 lost NC game as only loss)

Bob Stoops 2 times (2000 / 2004 lost in NC game as only loss)

Nick Saban has 5 national championships where his team didn't go undefeated. That's good for college football? Do you honestly believe that Notre Dame would get the same benefit? The same ND that pantsed the supposedly "best team ever in college football" only to have a bad game the next week derail their national championship efforts. There are exactly 2 programs in all of college football where that's possible: Alabama and Ohio State. The
