what we were asking OL to do back then is tremendously by jt

different than what we are asking them to do now.

Most strength programs (and I know Nebraska was for sure, because we copied there program) was all about the Olympic lifts and maximizing energy moving forward--come off the ball hard, fast, and get into the guy moving him backwards as quickly as possible. Power cleans and the like were the staple of the program.

Now, we want guys to be able to move forward, to the side, and backwards (in pass protection) with equal levels of skill. We've gotten rid of the massive shoulder pads (that made guys look even bigger and were really weapons when used correctly, but make it really hard to allow the guy to move side to side and backwards without tipping over).

In short, they're now expected to be athletic. Being powerful is good, but being able to move well is the most important thing.

the type of defensive lineman they're expected to block has also changed dramatically, but that is a different post.
