My first game ever. by irishrock

I was 11 years old and attended the 1980 ND/Purdue game...what a great memory. I had two cousins (one a senior and one a junior) on that team. We got into South Bend in the afternoon and hung out in the dorm with my cousins (Steve Cichy was my cousin's roommate). We went to the pep rally and it was a pretty cool spectacle to witness. I did not know what teepeeing was and so when this roll of toiled paper came down in front of me, I had no clue what to do.
Some student saw it and told me to grab it and give it a hurl...little did he know what he created...I loved teepeeing people's yards after that. We then went out to some bar-b-que place...I don't remember the name.

Next day, went to the game...it was a hot one. ND won pretty handily over a Mark Hermann led Purdue team. I remember a bedsheet sign hanging out of a dorm that said "Strue Purdue and Sports Illustrated too" as SI had ranked ND #20 to start the season. My uncle was an All American basketball player. After the game we went to a post game tailgate. My uncle was an All American basketball player and was on the 1956 Olympic team that won the gold medal with Bill Russell and KC Jones. So he was good friends with Digger. Digger was wearing a big old cowboy hat and sunglasses because he didn't want to be bothered by fans. My dad introduced me and I said, "who is that?" That's the ND basketball coach. He seemed like a neat guy...obviously had a ton of charisma (I've got a few other funny Digger stories)

The next year, I couldn't attend the MSU game, but my cousin who was then a senior spoke at the pep rally...I wish I could have attended but by then I had my own grade school football games to play.
