There's no rational comeback to your question. by revressbo

If Kelly loved Notre Dame, it'd be one thing. A guy like Bill Snyder, for instance, was a KSU-lifer, because he liked the place. In this hypothetical, maybe BK would be like ND so much that he turned down national championship opportunities elsewhere.

But that's not BK. He is not like Lou or Weis or Faust or Ara or Rockne or Leahy. He's more like Willingham or Davie or Devine. He holds no special affinity to the place or its traditions. I think at best he tolerates it. It's a job/career place.

And it's not like South Bend is a thriving metropolis or a city he has any prior connection to. Why live in SB over Austin or LA? With the amount of money he's made/would continue to be making, he could afford a great place even in LA.

So why doesn't he leave? It has to be AT LEAST one of the following. There's hardly any other legitimate possibility. (The following are distinct but all sort of connected. My guess is it's a combination of multiple of these, but it has to be at least one.)

1) ND is actually a great job (shocking, I know...), based on fan support, money, exposure, national recruiting base, etc.

2) No other top program actually wants him.

3) He's incapable of achieving anything higher than these results, and he gets to use the "Notre Dame" excuse. Were he to achieve these results at a USC/Texas/etc., he'd be exposed as not actually a top-3 (or top-10) coach.

4) He doesn't want to take the stressful steps necessary to win a national championship (namely, being relentless/non-stopping on the recruiting trail) that would be expected at a place like Texas or USC. He knows that after all the BS thrown out by the ND administration and the 15 years prior to him, he can be comfortable with the ND fanbase's lowered expectations (there are people that actually legitimately want to build him a statue...) and coast.
