But I think using that metric to holistically judge "worthiness" gets to a level of subjectivity in schedule analysis that goes far beyond possible consensus. I am generally comfortable with the overall quality of Notre Dame's schedules vis-a-vis the field. "Earning the right" to compete for a championship can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Clemson has zero "signature" regular season wins over the past three years. And yet they've qualified all three times. I see nothing about Ryan Day's regular season accomplishments in 2019 and 2020 that differentiate him from what Kelly did in 2018 and 2020.

The difference lies with what happened next.
