I think his brother's comments indicate a sense of obligation, but that is open to one's interpretation.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL; New Notre Dame Coach Senses Weight of the Job

By Edward Wong

Jan. 2, 2002

When asked about the impact of Notre Dame's appointment of its first black head coach, Willingham said, ''That would be for others to say, not I.''

But Willingham has recently gone on record lamenting the low number of black head coaches in college football, saying in October that ''I don't think you can say we're building any momentum.'' And when he was considering the Notre Dame job in the last couple of weeks, he had conversations with his younger brother, Jerome, about what it would mean historically if a black man became head coach at Notre Dame.

''He had to leave Stanford, and understanding the historical significance of it tipped the scale,'' his brother said. ''It's something you have to think about. Our conversation sort of stimulated that thought.''
