I've known a few kids who've been recruited by both schools by jt

these past few years, a few of whom signed with each (and a few of whom signed with different schools like Michigan, Washington, Colorado, and a few others). I also know a kid who got hurt at Ohio State's camp and who was asked to grayshirt instead of signing a LOI and who was basically told by Urban Meyer that he was no longer welcome with his class. It was fucking cutthroat and Meyer is a complete fucking asshole.

The impression that I got is that Notre Dame sells the football program just as much as the other places but they also sell the community and the education moreso. The head coaches at the other schools were much more involved in the recruiting process, as Kelly likes to wait until the very end. I know of one recruit who just didn't think ND was that serious about being the top of college football and definitely didn't feel like it was taken as seriously.

Now, is this really any different than 1990 (as you ask), or better yet, 1988 (since we know that it's not 1988 anymore)? I don't think so. Notre Dame really ought to sell it's community and potential for contacts down the line. All of those schools most certainly had the same mindset about majoring in football back in those days as well, and it was likely worse with the athletic dorms, etc. that were a big part of early 1980's football. I would say that the biggest difference is likely the involvement of the head coach and the belief (or lack thereof) that ND can compete week in and week out with the best of the best.
