To be champion, you must beat two top-4 teams in a row. by IrishJosh24

Brian Kelly has not beaten two top-4 teams in eleven seasons.

He beat Clemson (then #1, likely to finish #3 or even #4) in the regular season, when they didn't have their Number-1 NFL pick at QB and didn't have four defensive starters. It was a satisfying win, and I hate to take anything away from it, but it's not really a great indication that Brian Kelly would ever achieve the same result to end the season. An elite team is unlikely to be without five starters (and two or three of its best players) in the playoffs.

But even if that win were an indication, it is an isolated exception to the rule - not just this year (which also had two blowout losses to top-4 teams) but for all of Brian Kelly's eleven-year tenure. It's the only time Brian Kelly has ever beaten a top-4 team. He'd need to do it twice in a row, with a week or so between outings, to win a championship.

It is hardly "knee-jerk" to suggest that Brian Kelly will not accomplish this feat. We have eleven years of evidence staring us in the face.
