I’ve been fair to Kelly. I even had a respectful back and forth with Bonger post-Clemson 2 about getting a chance to play Alabama, why we should embrace it, etc. I get killed on the board for being a BK apologist, even though I’m far from it.

I agree BK has gotten the program miles from where it was in 2012 and has even improved dramatically since then. He’s got a legitimate top 5 or 8 program and he deserves praise for that. I didn’t think the post Van Gorder era would be this good. I’m not saying it’s good enough, but I’m saying the team is far better now than even 2 years ago.

But where I agree with the naysayers is pretty much everything in this article. It’s spot on.

The question - do we think that we can continue progressing under BK? That’s not a question that should be answered with emotion. You don’t like BK - fine. He annoys me too. His shortcomings in big games planning and execution are obvious.

But firing coaches can lead to all sorts of problems and I’d say 90% of the time things stay the same or get worse in college football. Ask yourself if any program that has fired a coach since we hired BK has improved to a level more than ND. There are few, such as Iowa State, they have materially moved up the ladder in one coaching regime. There are probably less than 10 in the last decade.

This is a sober question - can he get us there? Is he bringing in playmakers at WR and depth in the secondary? Will be develop a qb not named Ian Book? Is he able to put aside is stubborn nature and learn to be a better preparer for big games?

If he believe he can keep closing the gap, I think you keep him. If you don’t think so, you probably let him go - if you have a guy in mind whom you think is better.
