Right Kinda Cracks by Kayo

  • If the Irish lose to a better opponent, so be it; but a better prepared, smarter opponent is unacceptable.

  • Discussing the three remaining teams after ND’s loss on Friday, Brian Kelly said, “There's certainly a few teams that have a couple more weapons that can be explosive, but you don't necessarily have to walk around and be the best team every week. You just need to be the best team on that given day.” Just once, coach. Please, just once.

  • The Irish entered Friday’s game 19.5-point underdogs, the largest point spread in the seven-year history of the four-team college playoff, and lost by only 17. That’ll show ‘em.

  • They can call it anything they want. It wasn’t the Rose Bowl. It was nothing like the Rose Bowl.

  • I wish I knew which media creature asked these stupid questions so he or she could be mocked by name, and I’m pleased that the Notre Dame players didn’t get sucked into the questioner’s inane vortex… IDIOTIC REPORTER: Sorry for the tough loss down there tonight. What does Alabama, their wide receiver Smith, what does he look like up close and personal? He looks like one of those that's going to be playing Sunday afternoons or any time during the NFL. JEREMIAH OWUSU-KORAMOAH: What does he look like up close? IDIOTIC REPORTER: Yeah, in person. You see him in person because we've only seen him on video and film and all that stuff. What does he look like up close? SHAUN CRAWFORD: I think he's 6'1", 175.

  • I don’t mean to diminish the good game he had, but it’s kind of a shame that Jay Bramblett is the Notre Dame player most deserving of a game ball.

  • Can a bowl game earn Pinkel Award nomination by inviting a 3-7 team to participate?

  • The season’s Pinkel Award nomination list is short without the usual SEC pre-rivalry 1-AA games and with Liberty, which beat two ACC teams (Syracuse and Virginia Tech), not being the patsy it once was. That leaves us with Clemson for squeezing The Citadel into its abbreviated schedule, a game that would earn consideration any year and stands head and shoulders above the competition in 2020.

  • Notre Dame’s Katy Lonergan, Assistant Athletics Director in the Communications group, gets this week’s Hardin Award nomination and what I believe should be the season’s award by proclaimation for both quantity and quality in her Alabama postgame notes. Notre the convenient omission of Brian Kelly’s contribution to many of these proud pronouncements. The Irish are 33-5 since the beginning of the 2018 season (.868), and are 5-3 all-time in the series with Alabama… Notre Dame is 20-14-3 when both teams are in the Top 5… Notre Dame has outscored opponents 165-42 in the second quarter this season… The Irish are 4-4 in bowl games vs. No. 1 opponents… Notre Dame has won six of the last eight games when playing No. 1, the most recent win being this season vs. then-No. 1 Clemson (11/7)... Brian Kelly is 19-11^ in his career in postseason matchups… Notre Dame is 120-40-7 in neutral site games. In the Brian Kelly era, the Irish are 17-8… The Irish held Alabama to 31 points Friday, Alabama’s lowest point total of the season and more than two touchdowns below their 11-game average of 49.73 points per game. It is also Alabama’s lowest point total since the 2018 National Championship game… The Irish entered the day with the ACC’s top time of possession value (33:57 minutes per game), which ranked eighth in the FBS. With 33:43 Friday, Notre Dame won the time of possession battle in 11-of-12 games this season. Notre Dame limited Alabama to just nine possessions on the day, the fewest for the Tide this season, and the fewest for Alabama since at least 2015.

  • The postgame notes might be shameless, but at least the Notre Dame players understand compromised dignity.

  • ACC! ACC! ACC!

  • Asked what the next step for his program is, Kelly said, “I really don't want to continue to go down this path. We're going to keep getting here, OK? And we're going to keep banging at it.” Step one, I believe, is to recognize who’s banging and who’s getting banged.
