Elite programs don’t accept these results. by Bruno95

A lot needs to be done, and the sense of urgency will pick up next year. The losses from this roster will hurt. So might as well start rebuilding now.

First, I’d like experienced coordinators. Ideally that would include Rees returning to QB coach. Pyne and Buchner would benefit from his dedicated tutelage, he could still have game-planning and play-calling input, and he’s not yet good enough to be our offensive coordinator.

Both coordinators were exposed, and we can learn from what happened to Lea. Alabama scored 31 because they didn’t feel like scoring more. Same with Clemson. Michigan last year cannot be and has not been forgotten. While most of that generational embarrassment falls on Kelly, Lea was awful that night. He was awful the last two games. I think a better replacement can be found.

This isn’t a training ground. We need to get that through our heads. Other programs train people to work at places like Alabama. We can’t be giving both coordinators their first shot.

If we want to hang with the best, we need to start with the basics: seasoned elite staff, maniacal recruiting.

We need an entire staff of Lance Taylor types. He and Quinn (who I didn’t want, was wrong about, but did have experience as a line coach and head coach) did good jobs this year. They’re also recruiting well.

I don’t say this to demean players who played their asses off. None left effort on the field. But our #1 and #2 QBs are CB sized. And that’s just the start. It was painful to see the lack of separation from our WRs. Alabama didn’t have to start a graduate transfer at DB from North Carolina State to cover the best receiver in the game. Instead they had elite DBs covering a grad transfer WR from Northwestern.

That cannot be our roster. Yet again our CB recruits are mainly three stars with middling offers. Styles is a high end WR recruit, as was Jordan Johnson. That’s two in three classes. And people wonder why Book looked panicked in the pocket.

ND was pummeled yesterday yet covered the spread. That should tell you both what this team is, and what the world thinks of our “elite” status. We have a long way to go.
