My sense is this has changed a lot by UpperEastSideIrish

Remember when we spent a ton of money on Weis after half a season?

I suspect that embarrassed a lot of people (appropriately so - that never should have happened). The “ND is good at football or else” faction was pushed out.

Now you have pro-choice, more academic focused folks who see football as a great tradition and less of a necessity / identity.

When you go to the annual NYC Wall Street Dinner, Fr. Jenkins pronounces “No-tra Dame” like he’s a bit of an elitist snob. That mentality permeates the Board of Trustees, if I had to guess. There are people from the old school still around. But more and more parents care about the US News Rankings than football. Being a staunch Catholic college with blue collar, traditional roots with a great football program - sorry, that doesn’t sell at Georgetown and Upper West Side dinner parties.
