I would not accept this thesis uncritically by ndtnguy

Recreation is a basic human good. Any particular instance of sports or other recreation is obviously of very limited value. But the entire apparatus of all sports? That's a critical social outlet on which society relies.

Perhaps its social function can be replaced by something else, but there is not an obvious candidate at the moment. Just because individual people can perform the personal and economic activities needed to sustain life does not mean that nothing else is necessary for society as a whole to function. Even apart from its economic role, American society depends quite a bit on sports.
