As a former Observer employee by LondonDomer

shit happens. Working there was a ton of fun, but it can also be quite stressful.

For the editors, that means you are in class all day, then need to get dinner, take care of any homework, and get to the Observer office. Probably get there around 7 p.m. or so and then you're there for the next 5-8 hours. You're reviewing copy and graphics in addition to laying out the pages. The sports editors have it the toughest because they're 1) the most scrutinized section and 2) stories don't come in until often late at night. Being in the office until 2 or 3 a.m. was pretty typical. If you were done by midnight, it was a good night and everything went smoothly. And this was every day, plus many hours planning stories, doing interviews, etc. It's not surprising things sometimes slip through the cracks.

With that said, we all took it very seriously as far as delivering quality. I'm sure this kid if very embarrassed and pissed at himself.

Was a great job overall, though not very lucrative. As an assistant editor I got $15 per page for layout, which I usually did 4 pages/week. I think my hourly rate would typically be in the $2-3 dollar range, all things considered. Kept me in beer money though.
