Question about face-offs for people who know lacrosse by mikeybates

In sports where possession is fixed or relatively fixed (such as baseball, football, or basketball) there are alternating possessions. In sports where possession is fluid (such as hockey or soccer) there are not alternating possessions.

My question is this: why does lacrosse (where possession is relatively fixed) place such emphasis on a single skill (winning face-offs) which enable certain teams to dominate time of possession and win games by taking twice as many shots as the other team? Why not have alternating possession?
