MLB Network Top 10 Right Now
by TheRC (2024-01-10 10:38:58)

Just kicked off last night with starting pitchers but they have a side fan vote going on for Top 10 players not in the Hall of Fame.

I thought that would make an interesting discussion.

Criteria:
1) I'm going to exclude Shoeless Joe and Pete Rose. Clearly their play merited HoF but have been excluded for off-field reasons.
2) I'm excluding Bonds, Clemens, ARod and the other suspected steroid players as well.
3) Player must have already appeared on a HoF ballot (so no active or recently retired players please)

If you're game, submit your Top 10 overall and your starting lineup (8 pos + DH + RH starter + LH Starter + Reliever)

Dr. Frank Jobe should be on the list.

Top 10 Overall
01 2B Bobby Grich
02 RF Dwight Evans
03 3B Dick Allen
04 2B Lou Whitaker
05 CF Dale Murphy
06 RF Reggie Smith
07 C Bill Freehan
08 1B John Olerud
09 RP Dan Quisenberry
10 RP John Franco
11 CF Kenny Lofton

By Position
C Bill Freehan
1B John Olerud
2B Lou Whitaker
3B Darrell Evans (very tempted to put Robin Ventura here)
SS Bobby Grich (came up as SS in Orioles org but blocked by Belanger)
LF Reggie Smith (LF very weak for non-HoFers)
CF Dale Murphy
RF Dwight Evans
DH Dick Allen

RHP Luis Tiant
LHP Tommy John
RP Dan Quisenberry

If I can't move Grich to Shortstop then he's at 2nd and Bill Dahlen at Shortstop. I might move Dick Allen to 3B and make Lou Whitaker the DH.

I just compared his numbers to Andre Dawson

on Baseball Reference and it is hard to see why one is in and the other out. Dawson played about 400 more games and had the one monster year with the Cubs.

Dawson’s BA is about 15 points higher, but Murphy’s OBP is higher. Both won multiple GG and SS awards. Murphy had the back to back MVPs and Dawson had 1 with the Cubs.

Murphy missed 50 games in 2 seasons, but played all 162 4 straight years.

Their 162 game averages are very similar. Murphy averaged more HRs. Dawson a couple more doubles.

Dawson hit about 50 more home runs, but again played 400 more games.

That's a good question

He had an amazing peak but was something of a late bloomer and then injuries really took a toll and caused the last 5 years of his career to be not very good either.
