Hall of fame coaches have the occasional team that lacks leadership - Pitino's 2009-10 team with the maddening Edgar Sosa, Samadro Samuels, Jerry Smith, et al that lost 13 games and exited the tournament in the first round for example. Boeheim had consecutive NIT squads in 2006-07 and 2007-08 with talented senior "leaders" like Darryl Watkins and Demetris Nicholls, leading talented underclassmen like Onuaku, Devendorf, and Harris. Boeheim paid a lot for those guys and got zip for leadership. Other good coaches like Jay Wright and Jamie Dixon have had rudderless teams in recent years. Even Calipari, who specializes in working without upper class leaders, never quite got through to his team this past season including before Noel was injured.
I have issues with this staff, but its track record keeping the team motivated isn't one of them.
